The Cateran Trail

64 Miles (102km), 6-7 Days

Blairgowrie - Blairgowrie

Grade: Easy to Moderate

The Cateran Trail
Experience the best of Scottish country life, wildlife in abundance, wide open spaces and small highland villages on The Cateran Trail. This 64 mile waymarked circular walk through Highland Perthshire and the Angus Glens uses old drove roads and existing paths to explore one of Scotland’s forgotten corners. The word Cateran’s translates to “cattle rustlers” who caused havoc from the Middle Ages until the 17th century driving stolen cattle and booty through these remote glens. Follow in their footsteps today as you explore this beautiful land.

Your journey begins in Blairgowrie, a pretty market town which straddles the River Ericht. From Blairgowrie you walk to Bridge of Cally, Kirkmichael, Enochdhu (which means black meadow or moor), Spittal of Glenshee, Kirton of Glenisla, Alyth and finally return to Blairgowrie at the end of a rewarding 64 miles.

Macs Adventure offers two outstanding independent self-guided walking holidays on The Cateran Trail. Your holiday is tailor made for you and every holiday we offer features hand-picked overnight accommodation in high quality B&B’s, country inns, and guesthouses, – each is unique and offers the highest levels of welcome, atmosphere and outstanding local cuisine—, daily door to door baggage transfer, a comprehensive guidebook and information pack as well as emergency telephone support.

Highlights:

  • Exploring Blairgowrie’s historic past of old mills, mill lades and weirs.
  • Enjoy the tremendous mountain views on the northern section of the trail
  • Visiting Dirnanean Garden (1 mile north of Enochdhu)
  • Enjoy the atmospheric bar at the Spittal of Glenshee.
  • Soak up the peace and quiet of this less trodden part of Scotland

“ I just wanted to drop you a short note to thank you for the excellent service my wife and I received from you and your affiliates during our just completed great glen walk. The accommodations and hosts were uniformly superb, and the luggage transfers went off without a hitch. I have subscribed to your newsletter, and be sure that you will be my first choice for any further Scottish rambling.” Brad Harper, U.S.A.
