Getting to the Start of the Walk - Melrose
Melrose does not have a direct rail link but it is easily accessible by public transport and we do encourage all our clients to access walks by public transport wherever possible.

By Air
Edinburgh and Newcastle airports are the closest options and are served by numerous scheduled airlines from a multitude of locations. To access Melrose/Lindisfarne from either location there are regular trains which take 40/50 minutes to Berwick-upon-Tweed.

By Rail
There is a main line station at Berwick-upon-Tweed, linking with bus services to Melrose, Wooler, Fenwick & seasonally to Holy Island. GNER London to Edinburgh trains & also Virgin cross-country services between the Southwest, South Coast, Midlands & Scotland serve it. Call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 for further information, their website http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ also has an excellent journey planner which you may find useful. To connect to Melrose see www.travelinescotland.com for buses that connect or you will find also find a list of taxi operators for each station here http://www.traintaxi.co.uk .

By Road
Melrose is about an hour south of Edinburgh and Multimap (http://www.multimap.com) has a journey planner which is useful for planning car journeys. Should you be driving please contact your accommodation directly to enquire if parking is available. We generally recommend that you use public transport to access your walk as parking is not generally available at your hotel/guesthouse/B&B in Melrose (or other start points) for the duration of the trip.

Melrose & Jedburgh are both served by the National Express service Wrexham-Perth (via Manchester, Leeds & Newcastle) & the Scottish Citylink (www.citylink.co.uk) service Newcastle-Aberdeen. By Bus
There are regular REGIONAL bus services connecting Newcastle-upon-Tyne with Berwick-upon-Tweed and the intermediate towns and villages. Buses on routes '505' and '515' stop on the A1 trunk road at Beal which is 5 miles from Holy Island village across the tidal causeway.
On certain days a LOCAL bus service (Route 477) operates between Holy Island and Berwick-upon-Tweed. This is irregular due to the fact that the causeway is closed twice daily due to the tides.
Schedules are timed, so far as is possible, to interconnect with some (but not all) of the Newcastle/Berwick buses. The service enables bus-travel between Newcastle, Berwick and Holy Island although for Holy Island travellers will have to transfer from/to the regional services at Beal.
To find on which days there is a service and check the bus times, the following two tables must be used, which you will find here: More>>
Table 1:
is used to check which schedule is in operation on the date required
Table 2:
Lists the bus time table and the interconnections with the regional service for the schedule in operation.
To confirm times for the day that you are finishing I strongly recommend you use the Traveline service by either calling 0870 608 2 608 or using the website www.pti.org.uk.

Taxi: There is a local taxi service which provides a convenient way to transfer to Berwick-upon-Tweed or further afield. Holy Island Minibus Service can be contacted on 01289 389236 or mobile 07949212527 or email holyislandminibus@btopenworld.com. To Berwick they charge £16.50 for a group of up to four or £4pp for 5 or more people.
