Yorkshire Wolds Way Map and Itinerary

Below is a brief description of the trail, broken down into more detailed sections:

Arrive Hessle

You can reach Hessle easily by public transport. Trains go from Hull, Leeds and Sheffield and a local bus runs between Filey and Hessle. See the travel section for more detailed information.

Stage 1: Hessle to South Cave

As you leave the town of Hessle, the incredible Humber Bridge comes into view. Its size and architecture (once the world’s largest single span bridge) are impressive on the eye. Heading North you soon leave the pace of city life behind and enter the vast Yorkshire countryside. The ‘chalk hills’ of the Yorkshire Wolds follow and there are many quaint little villages such as Welton and Brantingham were you can come off the path and explore before finally ending up in the village of South Cave .

Stage 2: South Cave to londesborough

The walk heads through rolling fields with some breath-taking scenery. The walk becomes more remote in this section and you pass a couple of small villages which are perfect for a lunch stop en-route. As you enter Londesborough prepare your cameras for the fantastic dry valleys which are one of the gems of the Wolds.

Stage 3: Londesborough to Fridaythorpe

This section of the walk climbs higher and can be a slightly more strenuous day but provides some fantastic views down over the Wolds Way. You then climb gradually to reach Fridaythorpe (the half way point of the walk) and If you are making good time you might even wish to head off the path slightly and into Kilnwick Percy. Here you will find Madyamaka Bhuddist Centre which is a tranquil stop .

Stage 4: Fridaythorpe to North Grimston

You are right in the heart of the Wolds on this section. Prepare for open landscapes and quiet surroundings. If you have time, the medieval deserted village of Wharram Percy is worth a visit—it dates back as far as the iron age. Just after Wharram Percy you will pass by the village of Wharram Le Street before finally reaching North Grimston.

Stage 5: North Grimston to Ganton

As you leave North Grimston you pass Wintringham, a small village with a large parish church. At this stage of the walk there are many farm tracks and gentle woodland walks as you pass by West and East Heslerton and down into Sherburn and finally Ganton.

Stage 6: Ganton to Filey

This stage of the walk descends down through the small village of Muston and finally into the seaside town of Filey. There is only one steep climb at this stage of the walk and this can be found at the military installation of Staxton. You will end the walk in Filey a lovely little fishing town with plenty of facilities. Onward Travel There are frequent trains from Filey via York to the rest of the UK. If you need to retrieve your car form Hessle then you can catch the bus from Filey to Hull.
