Amalfi Coastal Trails Map and Itinerary
DAY 1 Arrive Starting Point: Amalfi
We recommend flying to Naples International Airport. Amalfi is 75km by road from the airport and we can arrange taxi transfers or you can travel by train to Sorrento and then bus/taxi to Amalfi.
Overnight: Amalfi is the ancient capital of the Amalfi Maritime Republic. Surrounded by enchanting mountains, wile away the hours exploring the steep streets and alleyways of this charming town. Hotel: The Albergo Lido Mare is run by the Camera family who offer hearty and warm welcome. Situated on a typical square the building dates from the 1300’s and the 15 ensuite rooms reflect this wonderful heritage. The terrace offers wonderful views of the Mediterranean and it’s just a short walk to the beach or centre of town.
DAY 2 The Valley of the Ancient Mills Walk (5.5 hrs)
Starting from your hotel you follow a scenic path up to the medieval Tower of Zirro to enjoy the first of many stunning coastal views. Walking along twisting mule tracks, through the fragrant groves of the typical lemon trees, you head into the wooded hills. You soon enter the valley of the watermills and can explore the ruins of the many paper factories. These date back to the 11th century and made Amalfi paper famous. The next highlight is the hamlet of Ravello with its picturesque gardens of Villa Cimbrone and the stunning 13th-century Villa Rufolo. You then walk back to Amalfi through Atrani. Overnight: Amalfi
DAY 3 Scala and the nature reserve of “Valle delle Ferriere” (5Hrs)
To start your day you take the public bus from Amalfi into the mountains to the village of Scala (25 mins). A quiet path leads into the nature reserve of “Valle delle Ferriere”, a deep vally surrounded by high cliffs. The stable microclimate allows for the preservation of the Woodwardia radicans - a rare type of long-leafed fern from the pre-glacial age. Your walk continues through meadows, small waterfalls and spectacular landscapes on a high path to the tiny hamlet of Pogerola. You then descend an ancient flight of steps towards Amalfi where you will spend the night. Overnight: Amalfi
DAY 4 Coastal Views from Mt. Tre Calli and first section of the Footpath of the Gods (min 2.5 hrs, max 6.5hrs)
Today you take a local bus to Bomerano and from here you can choose between two options depending on your level of fitness. A longer option includes a climb up Mt Tre Calli and the first section of the famous Path of the Gods. The shorter option is only the walk from Bomerano to Praiano along the path of the Gods. The Mt Tre Calli walk is one of superlatives. Incredible coastal views from ancient paths cut into the mountainside will have you continually reaching for your camera. You reach the central square of Bomerano by local bus. From here you can opt for the longer option including a great walk that leads towards the highest massif of Amalfi Coast, Sant’Angelo a Tre Pizzi. The coastal views areinspiring! The walk ends in the central square of Bomerano and from here you start the first
section of the famous Path of the Gods, from Bomerano to Colle Serra where you enjoy some of the best views of the Coast. From here you take some stairs going down to Praiano.
Overnight: Praiano
Praiano is the hidden gem of the Amalfi Coast, a quaint fishing town away from the busy tourist areas and offering rich culture and history, great views of Positano and an authentic experience.
Hotel: The comfortable family run Hotel La Perla is perched overlooking the sea at Praiano. The spectacularly situated restaurant specialises in local produce and local wines.
DAY 5 Valley of Praia Walk (3Hrs)
Depending on your interests, today you can opt for a relaxing time in Praiano or reach Sorrento by local bus and from here take the train to Pompeii in order to visit the world’s most captivating Roman excavation and experience a real intact image of this ancient world. If you prefer to walk you can enjoy a great walk along the valley of Praia. The walk ends at the Fjord of Furore, with its typical rock-face houses. From here, you can easily take the local bus to your hotel in the charming village of Praiano. Overnight: Praiano
DAY 6 The Footpath of the Gods (4.5 Hrs)
The Footpath of the Gods is justifiably the most famous walk on the Amalfi Coast and the highlight of your walking holiday. From Praiano you climb steeply to reach the convent of San Domenico, a stunning view point and the beginning of the most spectacular part of the world famous “Sentiero degli Dei” (Footpath of the Gods). As the path twists and turns high above the sea it offers some of the most remarkable views on the Amalfi Coast. Terraced lemon groves and tiny villages cling to steep cliffs over the crystal blue sea. You follow the vertiginous trail to the village of Nocelle, and then on to the charming town of Positano.
Overnight: Positano
Positano is commonly referred to as the Pearl of the Amalfi Coast, and for good reason. This charming town is so picturesque with its medley of peach, pink and terracotta houses stacked along the cliffs. There are also an abundance of beautiful shops, craft and jewellery stalls and elegant restaurants to tempt you.
Hotel: Hotel Villa Rosa commands a unique view of the sea and is well-known for its characteristic Mediterranean architecture, preserved from by-gone days and typified by its domed ceilings, its arches and porches. As the name suggests, flowers are the main theme of this beautiful hotel, to be seen everywhere from the bedroom decor to the delightful roses-clad terraces.
DAY 7 Isle of Capri Walk (3.5 to 5Hrs)
An unforgettable day of walking and exploring awaits as you take a boat to the Isle of Capri. You walk towards the impressive Roman ruins of the Villa Jovis, the palace of Emperor Tiberius, before joining the coastal path along the Arco Naturale until you reach the Faraglioni - the peculiar rocks protruding out of the sea. Later you can choose to visit the Convent of San Giacamo and the Gardens of Emperor Augustus or relax while enjoying a gelato, before returning to Positano.
Overnight: Positano
DAY 8 Onward Travel
From Positano you can return to Naples by bus/train or private transfer. We will supply details in your information pack.
