Hadrian's Cycleway Map and Itinerary

Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days & 5 Nights:

The below itinerary is based on our CESHCW2

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive Newcastle and check in to your guest house, the rest of the day is yours to explore the sights of Newcastle.

Day 2: Bowness to Brampton

After breakfast, we transfer you to Bowness-on-Solway to begin your cycle.  We will transfer bikes and luggage and if you are hiring bikes from ourselves we will make sure they are correctly fitted and ready for your journey ahead.  Bowness is an area of outstanding beauty and many species of birdlife can be seen around this spectacular area.  The days cycling starts off very gentle along the Solway Firth before reaching Carlisle and then undulating in to Brampton which is a pretty little market town.

Day 3: Brampton to Once Brewed

From Brampton you head north up past Banks and past Birdoswald where you will see some well preserved sections of Hadrian’s Wall, there are many smaller routes close by on this section and worth doing if you have time.  A long descent follows into Haltwhistle and then you climb north coming off the cycleway at the summit of Smith's shield up to Once Brewed where you can sample many local Ales in the Twice Brewed Inn.  There are many circular cycles around once brewed so if you have an extra day we would recommend the cycling around here or you might want a rest day.

Day 4: Once Brewed to Corbridge

Several important Roman sites along Hadrian’s wall are passed on this section and the cycle down to Vindolanda is exceptional.  A slight detour towards Housteads provides outstanding views over Vindolanda and then you climb up to Crindledykes which is the highest point onm the route (263 metres above sea level).  You then head past Hexham and reach the quaint village of Corbridge for your overnight stay.

Day 5: Corbridge to Tynemouth

The final section of the cycleway follows the banks of the River Tyne as you head east. The path soon heads into the western suburbs of Newcastle and follows the purpose built cyclepath.  It follows the quayside through the city centre and you can catch a glimpse of the Millenium Bridge. The river widens as you reach Wallsend which is the starting point of the Hadrian’s Wall walking path and finally you head up to Tynemouth where your cycle finishes.  We will arrange a time to meet you and pick you up and take you back into newcastle for your overnight stay.
