Highlands and Islands Discovery

Self guided drive and hike through the heart, highlands and Islands of Scotland. Explore and experience the best of wild Scotland.

Experience Scotland’s most rewarding landscapes and heritage on this drive and hike adventure. Escape the crowds with exhilarating walks in heather clad mountain glens past rushing burns and silent lochs. Reach new heights with an ascent of Ben Nevis and marvel at the wild western shores. Majestic hikes await you on rugged Skye while the remote ancient Hebrides draw you along ancient trails. Follow the flight of the eagle down through the Highlands past the head of Loch Ness to trek in battle scarred Culloden. Travel on through whisky country to complete your trip with walks in historic Highland Perthshire.

Starting in Glasgow you drive north to the Trossachs where you may ascend Ben Ledi and trek through forested glens. The ravaged beauty of the Highland peaks provides the backdrop for walks until you reach Fort William in the shadow of imposing Ben Nevis, a rewarding summit. From the sliver sands of Morar, Skye beckons you over the sea toward mountains towering over the moors and rocky maze of the Quirang.

Further west the protecting arm of the Gaelic rich Outer Hebrides affords walks along white sand beaches in the footsteps of ancient man. Back on the mainland at Ullapool you may hike the remote peak of Ben More Assynt with only the sound of nature to guide you down for your drive past the top of Loch Ness and on into Inverness. Nose and taste distinctive malts as you enter whisky country before travelling on down past ancient Caledonian pine forests and the Cairngorm Mountain range. Driving on to highland Perthshire you may walk the ways and paths trodden by Queen Victoria. With 12 walking days and 13 nights you are sure to experience the highlights of Scottish walking on this voyage of discovery.

The tour includes accommodation on a B&B basis, ferry crossings for clients plus car to Skye, Outer Hebrides and back to Ullapool on the mainland. We also provide you with a guidebook and a map, a comprehensive information pack and emergency assistance if required. This trip is only suitable for those with a vehicle due to the distances involved and the remote nature of the locations.

Highlights:

  • Summiting the glaciated dome of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain
  • Exhilarating exploration of the rocky maze of cliffs on Skye's Trotternish Peninsula
  • Treading the path of ancient man at the 5000 year old Callanish Standing Sones on Lewis
  • Spotting the blow of a whale or the leap of a dolphin while sailing through the Islands
  • Letting your mind run with bygone battles at Glencoe and Culloden
