This short break is perfect if you’re itching for a taste of the exotic and also want to spend time exploring impressive mountain landscapes on foot. Marrakech is an ideal city break - full of cultural highlights that you’ll only find in the ‘Red City’. The wonderfully warm climate of Morocco echoes the warm welcome of the Berber people in the mountains, where the best way to explore is in the company of a local. Here you’ll have your own personal walking guide to lead you along trails through the valleys and peaks of the Atlas.

Vibrant Marrakech is a popular city break and two nights here will allow you to immerse yourself in a distinctive North African culture, visiting bustling souks, beautiful Arab-influenced architecture, and tranquil colonial gardens. Stay in a traditional Riad, where you can retreat at the end of a busy day of wandering the city’s bustling streets.

Under an hour away you’ll find yourself at the foot of the Atlas mountains, where you’ll stay two nights at the charming Hotel Tatfi. There's time to revel in the panoramic views and explore with walks past remote Berber villages with views across majestic peaks.

Your tour of Morocco includes 2 nights in a boutique Riad, 2 nights at Hotel Tatfi, 4 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners, return airport transfers to Marrakech airport, transfers between Marrakech and Hotel Tatfi, services of a qualified walking guide in the mountains, a detailed information pack and guide book.

DAY 1: Arrive Marrakech

Vibrant Marrakech is a fascinating city, alive with bustling souks, tranquil gardens and the ancient medina (old town). The city itself is built around the 12th century Koutoubia mosque, a classic piece of Almohad architecture with its iconic minaret punctuating the city’s skyline.

Fly into Marrakech Menara International Airport for the transfer to your boutique Riad.

Overnight: Boutique Riad Slitine, Marrakech

You’ll find elegant Riad Slitine inside of the old town’s red adobe walls, at the heart of Marrakech’s medina and just two minutes’ walk from the Djemaa el-Fna square. Rooms have access to the fruit-tree filled courtyard or patio and all have air-conditioning. Relax on the roof top terrace, where you’ll find a covered seating and lounge area, or take a dip in the heated swimming pool. Guests also have access to a private hammam bath house and massages are available.

DAY 2: Free time to explore Marrakech

Spend today delving into this colourful city’s cultural highlights. At the heart of the ancient walled medina (old town) is the Djemaa el Fna square, where storytellers, acrobats, medicine men, musicians and even snake charmers vie for attention.

The medina’s souks (markets) are the place to pick up a memento of your time in Morocco and partake in some friendly bargaining with the Berbers and southern tradesmen who gather here to sell their carpets, leather goods, jewellery and spices.

In contrast, the colonial Ville Nouvelle quarter is home to pavement cafés, boutiques, gardens and boulevards. Visit the stunning 12-acre botanical paradise of the Majorelle Gardens, owned by the late Yves Saint Laurent. Here you’ll find the intriguing Museum of Islamic Arts, the fashion designer’s personal collection of North African carpets, ceramics, furniture and doors.

You’ll be entranced by the sounds, smells and sights which play on your senses as you wander through the fascinating ‘Red City’. Morocco has plenty of delicious cuisine to tempt your palate —from food stalls to friendly cafés, or for a real treat dine in style at a sumptuous palace-restaurant.

Overnight: Boutique Riad Slitine, Marrakech

DAY 3: Transfer to the Atlas, Ouirgane Valley circular walk

Following breakfast, your driver will transfer you deep into the Atlas to Hotel Tatfi (approx. 50 mins). After you have settled in, there is plenty of time for you to start exploring the mountains today.

Meet your personal walking guide at Hotel Tatfi, and set off into the mountains through a remote landscape of olive trees and red-hued slopes.

Your English-speaking guide will come from this area, and has been walking these trails for many years. Their local knowledge will mean you see the very best of the Atlas, and that you are also helping to support a member of the community.

Enjoy lunch at Tighfist village (1220m), served at a Berber house (or opt for a picnic) and experience this 5000 year old culture first-hand. Pass through the ancient Jewish village of Anraz, following the trail through the village of Torourt and back to Hotel Tatfi.

Walk: 6hrs

Dinner & Overnight: Hotel Tatfi, near Ouirgane

Delightful Hotel Tatfi is one of those very special places that you long to stumble across on your travels, and fittingly means ‘The Sweetness’ in Berber language. Under an hour’s drive from Marrakech, you’ll find a peaceful haven with 360 degree views over the mountain peaks. Fragrant gardens filled with olive and fruit trees are the ideal spot to unwind, or sit back and relax on the terrace overlooking the bio gardens, where the restaurant grows its own vegetables. Cooking lessons are also available from the Berber kitchen, where traditional recipes flavoured with exotic spices will tempt your palate.

DAY 4: Circular walk in the Azzaden Valley

The beautiful Azzaden Valley, so characteristic of the Toubkal region, is yours to explore with your personal mountain guide. Perhaps take a 6 hour circular walk, climbing to the TiziNtacht peak at 2200m to enjoy views over the valleys of the Toubkal National Park. Descend to Tassa Valley, visiting earthen adobe Berber villages to with lunch in a Berber house (or opt for a picnic) before returning through apple orchards to Hotel Tatfi.

Comments about macs adventure Marrakech & The Atlas Short Break:

This was an excellent trip with a good combination of city and countryside. The transfers were well-organised and took away the hassle of haggling the minute we arrived. Both hotels (Riad Slitane and Hotel Tatfi) were very comfortable, hospitable with good food and great staff. The mountain walks and our guide, Ali, were a real highlight of the trip. It was great to experience a different part of the culture and to get a good introduction from a local person.

Comments about macs adventure Marrakech & The Atlas Short Break:

Fantastic way to celebrate my 50th birthday, a short break with amazing experiences. Riad was so beautiful, architecture, and furniture, so tranquil after the huslte and bustle of Marrakech, which at times is an assault on all senses good and bad but wouldn't have missed it out, you do need to be on your guard, but for those who would prefer you could hire a guide.Treated ourselves to an Hamman and massage in the riad which was very relaxing. Mountain trek was again amazing, stunning views, wonderful Berber villages, first day trek found quite hard, guide seemed to be walking very fast, day 2 was at a better pace with another couple which gave us time to take in all the great scenery, hotel again was a sanctuary, lovely food very good service from the young waiter very attentive to all our needs, and once again the mountain scenery and location was breathtaking.
