Cycle in the company of a local guide, pedalling past spectacular limestone karst peaks and along peaceful trails within the stunning countryside of Yangshuo.

These fairy tale landscapes of Southern China have to be seen to be believed—they are a cyclist’s and photographer’s dream. Bike on village trails alongside the Li or Yulong Rivers, past rice paddies and through ancient villages.

Marvel at the traditional villages with their 500-year old Ming and Qing Dynasty houses. Shop in a local market with its wonderful array of produce before embarking on a cooking class!

Day 1: Arrive Guilin

You will be met at Guilin Airport and transferred to your hotel.


Spend today getting over your jetlag, or time-permitting, begin to explore this city set in the heart of fairy tale limestone karst scenery. There are plenty of bars and restaurants near to your hotel in which to have dinner this evening.


Overnight: Jing Guan Ming Lou Hotel, (Guilin Museum Hotel), Guilin


This small and characterful hotel has a cosy feel and is in a scenic location on the southern side of Rong Lake. It has an eclectic collection of paintings, ancient furniture, old pottery and wood carvings.


Day 2: Morning guided tour of Guilin

This morning a very knowledgeable local guide will take you to see the highlights of Guilin, such as Elephant Hill, located on the western bank of the Li River or the Returned Pearl Cave and the Thousand Buddha Cave to see etchings of Buddha dating back to the Song and Tang Dynasties (618 - 1279).


This afternoon transfer to your unique guesthouse near Yangshuo. You may relax here and get orientated to this very special region of China.

This charming property set in the midst of the Yangshuo countryside is a cluster of renovated farmhouses. There are 23 spacious rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, a terrace and a garden where you may relax and admire the surrounding views.


Day 3: Cycle Loop via Baisha & Moon Hill

After breakfast transfer to the bicycle pick-up point and meet your cycling guide. Head towards the village of Baisha bordering the Yulong River (Jade Dragon River) and cross the famous 400 year old bridge. Ride alongside the river and through orchards of orange, mandarin, chestnut and pomelo trees. All the while you can admire the stunning rural scenery with its limestone karst peaks.


Later, you can either return to Yangshuo or take an optional ride to Moon Hill.

Day 4: Cycle Loop via Mushan

Pedal off towards Mushan this morning for another glorious day in the saddle. This 500 year old village is well known for its layout which follows the “8 Trigrams of Taoism”.


From here follow a path alongside the Li River as far as the fishing village of Liugong, known for its ancient houses and its “Three Coloured Pools”.

Day 5: Yangshuo cooking class.

This morning transfer to a cooking school which is set in the heart of the superb Yangshuo countryside. This incredible four hour cooking class involves visiting a local market to select the required ingredients, followed by a group class at the school. Cook dishes such as egg wrapped dumplings and duck, with picked ginger and chillies! Then enjoy the mornings labours with a wonderful lunch. The afternoon is then yours to relax at leisure!

Day 6: Cycle to Xingping

The first port of call today is Jiabolin village. Initially you'll pass by a flat area of rice paddies and bamboo-bordered waterways, before cycling into a much steeper area made up of rice terraces and fields of tea trees. Take a break at a waterfall whilst you take in the seemingly endless vistas of forest-cloaked peaks.


Pedal on through small villages and finish with a long descent into Xingping at the foot of "Five Finger Hill".

Overnight: Baoxiongzhuang Inn, Xingping


This simple inn has 9 rooms, ensuite bathrooms and all the comforts of home. With its private courtyard it also offers serenity in the heart of the village.


Day 7: Bamboo raft ride to Yangdi. Transfer to Guilin.

Taking a bamboo raft ride is a relaxing way to absorb the amazing views over the River Li. The rafts are built in a traditional style but are powered by an outboard motor.  This peaceful and spectacular journey takes about 2.5 hours, eventually arriving in Yangdi, further upstream.


From here transfer to Guilin where you will have more time to further explore this afternoon.

Day 8: Onward travel

After breakfast an included transfer brings you to Guilin Airport, from where you may take your onward journey.

Accommodation

7 Nights accommodation is included in a combination of guesthouses, inns and a small hotel.


They are all carefully selected small and friendly places that offer great value and warm welcomes. The accommodation we normally use is detailed in the itinerary, however should these particular lodgings not be available you will stay in places of a similar standard.


Solo Cyclists & Single Rooms

This trip is not available to solo cyclists as it is cost-prohibitive. Single rooms are available with an additional supplement.


Meals

7 Breakfasts and 1 lunch are included. Snacks and local fruits are also provided during the cycle rides.

Availability

You can start your Yangshuo cycling tour on any day of the week anytime between the beginning of April and the end October. 


Time of Year

This tour can be taken any time within the dates available.Springtime is glorious with nice blue skies and warm daytime temperatures. Towards the end of May and into June the Monsoon rains begin, so it could be quite wet. It is quite hot in July and August. A great time to go is September and October.


Grade & Terrain

This cycling tour in Yangshuo is rated moderate. The first 2 days of cycling will be relatively flat, but on the sixth day the terrain is hilly with many elevation gains and losses. You will be cycling mostly on dirt roads but also on tarmac roads. The distances are not far and you can go at a fairly leisurely pace. To fully enjoy this tour you will need a good level of fitness.


Navigation & Local Guide

A local guide will accompany you throughout the cycle rides. Therefore you can enjoy the surrounding scenery at your leisure and there will be no need for you to navigate.


You will also have a local guide with you on the morning sightseeing of Guilin and on the optional kayaking trip. A driver will transfer you to the cooking class, but a local guide will not be with your during this morning activity.


Baggage Transfers

Baggage transfers are included between accommodations. Please limit your bags to up to 20kg per person.


Bikes

The bikes are included in the cost of your tour. You can choose to cycle on a UCC 27-gear hybrid or mountain bike. They come with a rear luggage rack and panniers, a water bottle holder, helmet and lock. Your local guide will carry a puncture repair kit, spare inner tubes and a pump. Please supply us with your height upon booking so that we may make sure that your bike is the correct fit for you.


Travel Insurance

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.


General Information

The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes. Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat, sunscreen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard cycling gear such as good warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.

Getting to and from Guilin

Guiling Liangjiang International Airport is the best airport to fly into and is served by many Asian airlines, such as Air China and Air Asia. There are no direct international flights to Guiling, therefore you will have to connect via Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong or elsewhere. Upon arrival you will be picked up and taken to your guesthouse.

At the start and end of your tour you will be transferred between Guilin International Airport and your hotel.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as the region is extremely popular especially in the spring and autumn/fall. However, we will always try our best to accommodate your plans.

Do I need a visa for China? 

Most tourists visiting China require a Tourist Visa to enter the country and all travellers must have a passport valid for 6 months after their planned exit from China.

We operate this tour between April and October. I can be quite rainy with the monsoon influence at the end of May into June and the summer is quite hot, so spring and fall/autumn is the opitmal times to travel.
