The Amaru community is a native community based in the Inca’s Sacred Valley highlands. Families there preserve ancient Andean traditions such as agriculture, weaving, and folk music. Immerse yourself  in their daily lives by taking part in a weaving workshop. Hike through the native forest to choose the plants used to dye the fibres. Today you will explore the countryside of the Sacred Valley, north of Cusco and home to some important Inca ruins. Visit Pisac, home to colourful markets and a fantastic Inca citadel, surrounded by vast terracing, which offers wonderful panoramic views over the valley.

After a tasty lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the small town of Ollantaytambo, a whole village built on top of the original Inca foundations, the best surviving example of Inca town planning.

Day 5: Train to Machu Picchu and Explore

Boarding at Ollantaytambo,  enjoy a spectacular 1.5hr train journey down the Urubamba gorge to Machu Picchu. The Vistadome train has large panoramic windows giving you wonderful uninterrupted views as the scenery changes from mountain vegetation to cloud forest.

Availability and Time of Year

You can start this tour any day between March and December subject to availability. We recommend the dry season which runs from May until October. The trails in the rainforest are less muddy then, there is less chance of activities being affected by rain, and more macaws can be found on the clay licks.

Guides & Excursions

You will be accompanied by a private guide for Machu Picchu and in the Sacred Valley, who will bring the destination to life for you. For the Amazon, English-speaking guides are assigned on a 10:1 ration. Groups smaller than 10 will be merged with other groups under one guide. If you prefer a private guide for the Amazon, please let us know and we can get a price on this for you.

Quality guides make the difference between a great trip and a wonderful experience, and our Peruvian guides are fully qualified and trained. All have many years experience of guiding in Peru, and speak excellent English. They bring a wealth of knowledge to your journey, opening your eyes to the legends, culture, food, flora and fauna of the Andes.

This tour is graded as easy, as you will be touring around Peru by vehicle or train, stopping to enjoy the sights on foot where possible. You will do a certain amount of walking around the ruins and the rainforest, but this does not require any great levels of fitness, and therefore is suited to most people.
