Lady Anne's Way Overview

Retrace the footsteps of Lady Anne Clifford, the remarkable woman who owned many castles in the Yorkshire Dales and Westmoreland in the 17th Century. After her father died in 1605 she failed to inherit his estates which were passed on to her uncle. After nearly 38 years fighting to gain control of what was rightly hers, she spent the rest of her years restoring her castles and churches as well as building bridges, monuments and countless acts of charity.

This wonderful walk starts at Skipton Castle, the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales and heads in a northerly direction through the charming unspoilt villages of the Yorkshire Dales up into the rugged landscape of Mallerstang and the Eden Valley. The walk finishes in Penrith at Brougham Castle which was Lady Anne’s favourite castle and it was here she spend the last years of her life. You follow many of the paths Lady Anne followed as she frequently visited her estates and explore many of the other important historical buildings associated with her story. A historical and enchanting walk through some of Yorkshires most beautiful countryside.

Our Lady Anne’s Way walking holiday features hand-picked overnight accommodation in high quality B&B’s, country inns, and guesthouses at each overnight stop. Each is unique and offers the highest levels of welcome, atmosphere and outstanding local cuisine.
