St Jacob's Trail Map and Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrive Seekirchen/Lake Wallersee

Seekirchen is located by Lake Wallersee, the largest lake in the Salzburg lake district. It is easily accessible by a direct train from Salzburg (15 mins). Many low cost airlines fly into Salzburg Airport including Ryanair, Easyjet, Jet 2, Flybe and flythomascook. On arrival at your hotel in Seekirchen relax and take a stroll around the village visiting the ‘Lake Castle’ admiring the views across the lake. Overnight: Seekirchen on Lake Wallersee Hotel - GH Post Kat. B or Hirschenwirt

DAY 2

Walk to Eugendorf

This morning you start off by meeting one of our local partners at 08:30 for a briefing about your walk. They will provide you with detailed route notes and answer any questions you have. A short transfer to Oberhofen follows where the walking trail starts today. Heading south you pass Lake Wallersee through green pastures and pass many old chapels on route. You finish todays walk by heading through a nature reserve to the market town of Eugendorf.

Walk: 23km, 6hrs

Overnight: Eugendorf Hotel - Gasthaus Santner

DAY 3

Walk to Salzburg

Today you head down to the delightful city of Salzburg, fantastic views prevail across to the mountain ranges you pass through in the next few days. We recommend visiting the church of ‘Maria Plain’ which is a famous pilgrims church with views over Salzburg and the surrounding valley. It is renowned for its baroc style architecture and many pilgrims come to visit from afar. Quiet paths follow and you soon reach the river Salzach where you follow the side of the river into the centre of town. If you have time we recommend adding an extra night in Salzburg as there is so much to see and do. You can visit the birthplace of Mozart, wander through the old town which is a UNESCO world heritage site and shop in this marvellous city.

Walk: 13.6km, 4hrs

Overnight: Salzburg Hotel - Ganslhof

DAY 4

Walk to Bad Reichenhall

Todays walk leaves the city of Salzburg behind and crosses the German border at Grobgmain to enter Bavaria. You visit the castle of Marzoll on route and follow forest tracks to Bad Reichenhall. Take time to visit the new thermal Spa here in the salt capital of Bavaria.

Walk: 18km, 5.5 hrs

Overnight: Bad Reichenhall Hotel - Dora

DAY 5

Walk to Unken

Todays walk follows the river Saalach back into Austria and the Salzburg area. Passing Lake Saalachsee you head into the foothills of the mountains through the idyllic Saalach valley. Unken is your final destination today, it’s a peaceful mountain village with a pretty church.

Walk: 17km, 6 hrs

Overnight: Unken Hotel - Kirchenwirt or Wimmer

DAY 6

Walk to Waidring/St Ulrich

This is the nicest day along the whole trail so take your time and enjoy it! Continue along the river Saalach and watch out for kayakers below, Enter the mountain village of Lofer which is a quaint village with lots of traditional charm. You can take the optional visit to Saint Martin with its pilgrims church or just follow the forest path following the ‘Jakobsweg’ to Waidring.

Walk: 26km, 7 hrs

Overnight: Waidring/St Ulrich Hotel - Gschwentner or Schweizer Hof

DAY 7

Walk to St Johann in Tyrol

On the last day you can either follow the route via the dyke to St Johann or take the route past Lake Pillersee and St Jacobs Church - the second option being the more spectacular. The walk finishes in the market town of St Johann which is surrounded by Alpine Mountains.
