Traverse of the Picos de Europa

Take off on an 11 day walk across the Picos de Europa National Park. The Picos are without a doubt the most impressive mountains in Spain, emerging from the Cantabrian Sea to form a towering limestone frontier between the green north coast and the more arid central plains. Your trek will be an unforgettable journey into the heart of the paradise, which is the Picos de Europa National Park.

The Picos de Europa are made up of three capricious massifs have been sculpted by rushing rivers, creating plunging gorges and stunning peaks. You will be walking through some of the most vertical terrain in all of Europe, with elevations ranging from 120m to 2648m. The range of elevations in the Picos are home to a great variety of alpine flora and fauna, with daily wildlife spotting almost guaranteed.

Your walking adventure in the Picos begins with your first night in the village of Arenas de Cabrales. From here you are thrust into a world of vertiginous limestone canyons and cliffs, rushing mountain streams and expansive mountain plateau.

Over the 11 days of walking you will explore every aspect of the Picos de Europa and marvel at the diversity and sheer beauty of this little known mountain region.

The Picos has a long tradition of mountain hospitality and you will be staying in small 2** family run hotels and spend one night in the spectacularly located Ref Vega de Urriellu. Typical Spanish breakfasts and wholesome evening meals, featuring many local specialiites are all included. The local blue cheese, ‘Queso de Cabrales’, is particularly delicious, although very smelly. Baggage transfers, transfers during the walk, detailed route notes and maps and emergency support are also included as part of your holiday.

Highlights:

  • The natural unspoilt beauty of the Picos de Europa National Park
  • Walking through an endless variety of ever-changing landscapes: idyllic pastures, cool mysterious woods, wide glacial valleys, rushing streams and dramatic limestone formations.
  • Gazing up at climbers scaling the sheer walls of the Picu Urriellu.
  • Exploring the contrasts of all three massifs of the Picos
  • Marvelling at the incredibly diverse flora adorning every square inch of the Picos
  • Welcoming accommodations situated in tiny villages and stunning settings.
