Our Grading System Explained

Putting a grade on a activity holiday is always subjective and our grading guidelines should give you a better idea of what to expect on your trip. The grade applies to the overall intensity of the holiday and individual days may exceed the stated guidelines. Please refer to the individual trip itinerary for daily distances and descriptions.

Walking Grades

Easy EASY

A relaxed walking experience with ample time to appreciate attractions along the route. Generally on low level paths which are well maintained with clear signposting, the perfect choice for those with little or no previous experience of walking holidays.

Distance per Day: Less than 8 miles (13 km)

Easy to Moderate EASY TO MODERATE

Daily distances increase on some days and the terrain may be rugged underfoot with some hills but not too strenuous. Perfect for those with a relatively good level of fitness.

Distance per Day: 8 - 12 miles (13 - 20 km)

Moderate MODERATE

Perfect for regular walkers, some days will be more challenging than others and the terrain will be varied with some rough and rugged footpaths. More ascent and descent involved so a good level of fitness will be required.

Distance per Day: 13 - 15 miles (21 - 24 km)

Moderate to Strenuous MODERATE TO STRENUOUS

More challenging with some long walking days and often a longer trip duration. Tough underfoot in places with changing terrain, some prolonged climbs and steep hills, these walks are designed for experienced walkers looking for a challenge.

Distance per Day: 16 - 18 miles (26 - 29 km)

Strenuous STRENUOUS

Long walking days and challenging ascents/descents, these walks may require navigation and/or mountaineering skills. A good level of fitness and experience is required as the terrain can be rough and exposed in places.

Distance per Day: More than 18 miles (More than 29 km) or shorter days with steep ascent/descent

Cycling Holiday Grades

Easy EASY

Relaxed cycling, ideal for beginners and families looking for an adventure. Plenty of time to relax en-route with short cycling days and not many hills.

Distance per Day: Less than 20 miles (32 km)

Easy to Moderate EASY TO MODERATE

A more energetic holiday, perfect for occasional riders. Longer days so a better level of bike fitness required.

Distance per Day: 21 - 34 miles (33 - 54 km)

Moderate MODERATE

PYou can expect longer distances and some challenging days on this holiday. Perfect for regular cyclists who lead a fit and active lifestyle.

Distance per Day: 35 - 45 miles (56 - 72 km)

Moderate to Strenuous MODERATE TO STRENUOUS

A challenging cycling holiday perfect for those looking to test their abilities. Daily distances will be long and demanding and there may be some big climbs.

Distance per Day: 46 - 54 miles (74 - 86 km)

Strenuous STRENUOUS

Long days make for a challenging cycling holiday. Great for keen cyclists who have previous long distance cycling experience over multiple days.

Distance per Day: More than 55 miles (More than 88 km) or shorter days with steep ascent/descent
