Highlights

  • Easy cycling through beautiful Copenhagen, Northeast Zealand, and Sweden.
  • Experiencing the ‘bike capital of the world’, cosmopolitan Copenhagen.
  • The sandy beaches, blue sea and charming marinas of the Danish coastline.
  • A visit to Kronborg Castle, immortalised in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
  • The pleasure of cycling along well sign-posted, flat and quiet cycle routes.

Denmark is a country made for exploring on two wheels — gentle, well-signposted paths, and a culture where it is more common to pedal than drive, makes cycling here a very leisurely experience! On this tour you’ll take in the area known as Northeast Zealand as well as enjoy a short taste of Sweden.

Begin with a night in Copenhagen, a cosmopolitan city with plenty to offer in the way of culture and history. Cycle along quiet coastal paths past lovely sandy beaches and charming marinas. Take a short hop over to Sweden to explore the rocky peninsula of Kullen. And visit historic royal cities such as Hillerød and Roskilde.

Day 1: Arrive Copenhagen

Your tour begins in the capital city of Denmark, Copenhagen, often referred to as the bike capital of the world. The colourful, bike friendly streets combined with a beautiful coastline, a royal castle, and plenty of tempting places to wine and dine make it the perfect Scandinavian stopover.

Overnight: Copenhagen

Day 2: Cycle to Snekkersten/Helsingør

After being fitted with your bikes, leave Copenhagen and follow a cycle path along the coastline, passing the famous Little Mermaid statue and Amalienborg Palace. Continue past sandy Bellevue beach before arriving at Dyrehaven, renowned for its natural beauty and free-roaming deer.

Visit the former home of author Karen Blixen and now a museum, Rungstedlund. Stop off at a coffee shop by the marina before arriving at the pretty fishing village of Snekkersten, close to Helsingør.

Cycle: 50km

Overnight: Snekkersten

Day 3: Helsingør, Ferry and Loop Cycle to Sweden

Explore the highlights of Helsingør, which include the 16th century World Heritage Site of Kronborg Castle, immortalised as Elsinore in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The Danish Maritime Museum is also well worth a visit for its fantastic architecture and fascinating exhibition.

A short hop on a ferry (20 mins) takes you to Sweden. Here you can choose from a longer cycle to the rocky peninsula of Kullen, or a shorter variation on a similar route.

Cycle:  31—78km

Overnight: Snekkersten

Day 4: Cycle to Gilleleje

Leaving Helsingør, take in views of the Swedish coastline only 4km away, as you cycle towards Hornbæk, with one of the best beaches in Denmark. Continue pedalling along the coast on quiet lanes past lighthouses and the beach far below you.

Gilleleje, a lively fishing village, is the northernmost town on Zealand, and a beautiful holiday resort. Enjoy a lovely beach, a bustling harbour and a delicious meal at one of the many inviting restaurants.

Cycle: 30km

Overnight: Gilleleje

Day 5: Cycle to Hillerød

Bid farewell to your beautiful seaside hotel, and prepare for a change of scenery. Head inland along a quiet car-free cycle route to Helsinge through one of the largest forests in Denmark, Grib Skov. Arriving in charming Hillerød, cycle through the park, market square, and to the beautiful Fredericksborg Castle.

In the evening, relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the ambience of the square overlooking the lake and the castle.

Cycle:  30-48km

Overnight: Hillerød

Day 6: Cycle to Roskilde

Heading towards the coast again, continue to Roskilde Bay. An ancient city dating from the Viking age, Roskilde is a fascinating place to explore. Attractions include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking museum and Viking ships, and boatyard down at the harbour.

Cycle:  47km

Overnight: Roskilde

Day 7: Cycle to Copenhagen

Return to Copenhagen, riding through picturesque villages and the beaches south of the capital. A quiet path takes you along the coast, away from traffic, all the way into the city centre.  Pass the museum of modern art, the island Amager and several interesting architectural sights as you cycle along the canal path.

Cycle:  46km

Overnight: Copenhagen

Comments about Macs Adventure Copenhagen, Royal Zealand & Sweden:

We really enjoyed the trip. On the whole it was well organised - no hitches, bikes worked well and the route maps were good. Baggage transfers all went smoothly. Communication with Andy at Macs Adventures was consistently good. However we had absolutely no contact with Ruby Reiser during our trip, apart from the initial - very brief - meeting with Jasper when he gave us our bikes. Even though we had no issues along the way, it would have been nice to hear from the company at some point - just a phone call or text to check that all was going well.

Our accommodation was comfortable and efficient, if slightly lacking in character. We would have preferred to be located more centrally, particularly in Roskilde and Hillerod. Because we were staying in out-of_town hotels we had to get taxis to go into town for dinner/sightseeing which was an additional cost.
