My favourite B&B’s on Hadrian’s Wall Path

by kath on February 25, 2010

Hadrians Wall Path is one of the most popular long distance walking routes in the UK and a firm favourite of Macs Adventure clients. Having booked lots of walkers along the route over the last two years, I thought it would be useful to let you know about some of my favourite places for accommodation on Hadrian’s Wall.

1. NEWCASTLE (Jesmond)

Jesmond Hotel

A great place to spend your first overnight stay,  located in Jesmond only a 10 min walk to the metro to take you to Wallsend for the start of the walk.  All rooms are modern and en-suite and there is a great restaurant within the hotel.  Pam is great at replying to emails and they even take 1 night bookings at the weekends which is rare in Newcastle!

2. HEDDON AREA (Wylam)

Wormald House

Angela and John are the perfect hosts and will go out their way to make sure you have a great stay in Wormald House.  Wylam is located just 15 mins from Heddon-on-the-Wall which has very limited accommodation.   After a hearty breakfast, Angela and John are happy to take you back to Heddon in the morning to continue your walk.

3.  CORBRIDGE

Fellcroft

All our ‘Best of Hadrian’s Wall’ itineraries start in Corbridge which is a quaint little village just off Hadrian’s Wall Path.  It has a train station and is easily accessible from Newcastle and Carlisle.  Some of our longer itineraries stop in Corbridge aswell and is easily reach from Port Gate on the wall.  Arnold and Tove at Fellcroft will provide you with a warm welcome and will do all they can to help you before you set off in the morning and they are located right next to the train station. The Dyvel’s Inn is also another great place to stay in Corbridge and it is  right next to Fellcroft and the railway station.

4. CHOLLERFORD AREA (Humshaugh)

Mingary Barn

This newly renovated farmhouse provides lovely, modern accommodation just up from Chollerford.  Val will look after you well and make sure you have everything you need for your overnight stay.  The Crown Inn is within walking distance which provides excellent evening meals.

5.  ONCE BREWED

Vallum Lodge

Always getting great reviews, Vallum Lodge is the perfect stop in Once Brewed.  All rooms have mini bars and Ann is always on hand to help and make sure you have a comfortable stay.  The Twice Brewed Inn is within walking distance and provides lovely evening meals.

Saughy Rigg Farm

You will be assured of a warm welcome at Saughy Rigg Farm, all rooms are en suite and Kath will even collect you from Steel Riggs to drive you down to the farmhouse if you give her a call.  The farm serves excellent local produce and has a well stocked bar with many local ales….what more could you want!

6.  GILSLAND

Willowford Farm

Lauren and Liam (the son of Kath at Saughy Rigg!) run this fabulous converted farmhouse in Gilsland, their rooms are very modern and the provide delicious home cooked food for weary walkers!  They are fully licensed and offer a range of wines and beers to help you on your way.

Brookside Villa

Brookside Villa - Gilsland

Denise offers a warm welcome to all walkers in her cosy B&B in Gilsland, providing a high standard of accommodation and she even provides evening meals for walkers.  She gets great reviews and is always happy to help where she can!

7. BRAMPTON

Oakwood Park Hotel

What a beautiful setting!  Oakwood Park provides traditional accommodation just north of Brampton, again  providing evening meals so there is no need to walk anywhere after you arrive!  A great breakfast to get you on your way in the morning and packed lunches can be pre-booked.

8.  CARLISLE

Langleigh Guest House

Norman and Yvette run this luxurious guest house in Carlisle aswell as another one down the road!  Norman is a joy to work with on the email and they always provide a warm welcome to our walkers.  Meals can be pre-booked at Langleigh or Carlisle centre is only a short stroll away with many eating options.

9.  BOWNESS ON SOLWAY

Old Rectory B&B

The Old Rectory - Bowness-on-Solway Patsy is a wonderful host and always goes out her way to help our walkers.  She gets great feedback and has parking available for a small charge.  This is the perfect relaxing stay you need after finishing your walk!

There are many more wonderful places to stay en-route but I thought this list will do for now!  Hopefully this will be useful in seeing what great accommodation we provide on Hadrian’s Wall Path!
