Comments about Hill Towns of Tuscany Walking Holiday :
My wife and I had a great time hiking the hills of Tuscany. The scenery, food and wine were definitely worth the daily hikes (which also helped offset any weight gain)! The directions were very detailed and other than a few moments of occasional confusion it was impossible to stray off the well-marked path. A few of the hotel/B&B accommodations were somewhat off standard compared with the other great rooms in restored century old buildings. We would definitely do this again and will be looking for other similar adventures in the future!

My husband and I joined 5 other couples (friends) for a week of hiking as part of our month in Italy (mostly on our own). [...] In Italy the local company contractor and driving staff were prompt, friendly and provided excellent, very detailed maps and trail directions. All but one of the 6 hotels were excellent. One was very poor however. The pre-trip documents and correspondence had us booked at the main hotel in Bagno Vignoni, but the papers we received on day 1 of the tour put us in an ancient, dark, very dusty inn instead. I recommend NOT using this place for future tours. Overall, however, we enjoyed the quality and variety of types of accommodations and thought the breakfasts were very good…. considering our needs to fortify for long walks. The trails and daily walking itineraries were accurately described and very good, with one exception. On the longest hike day (about 15 miles), we enjoyed the first half of the walk away from Montalcino….until we reached a busy highway and were horrified to have to walk about a mile with cars whizzing by and no walking space. The rest of the walk that day was in open fields with almost no vegetation, including a very smelly pasture where about 100 sheep were gathered under the single tree–only to be disturbed by us. We were really put off by what we had to go through that afternoon. The company did offer a van ride to those who wanted to hike only half way…..but the ride was first thing in the morning, so those folks missed the best part and walked a miserable dusty route for the last half in very hot weather with no possible place to take care of personal needs. A better plan would be to have the shorter hike start in Montalcino and be picked up at the mid-way rest stop. Also on this day we wanted to go through nearby Buon Convento, which we later discovered was a jewel. However, we stayed with the provided guide directions because everything had been very pleasing so far. But, wish we hadn’t. I highly recommend re-routing this day’s hike from Montalcino directly tthrough Buon Convento to the agriculturismo accommodation.I hope these comments are helpful. We would definitely book with MacsTours again, if the price and hotel quality were competitive at a particular destination.

This was the highlight of my holiday. It is great to do with a group of your own friends, so that you can discuss and review often. The directions were great, with the odd occasional mistake in directions, but nothing that could not be rectified.Even though the walk was easy to moderate, it is not suitable for unfit people. I found the walk exhilarating and challenging, the weather was prefect for me. The accommodation was fabulous in each place, some places I would have loved to stay longer.

We all really enjoyed our Tuscan walk, however the weather was really hot, and some of the gentle climbs were in fact quite steep. Might be a good idea to also include an optional route each day to allow walkers to decide how far they want to walk.

As a tour leader of 10 friends I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the walk and visiting the hamlets along the way.
Loved Montepulciano. Would not have bothered with the wine tasting at Montalcino, a little overpriced. Where there are places you can taste wines for free.. eg: Montepulciano. It was better to step inside a shop and purchase the wines, hams and cheeses and enjoy them in your hotel courtyards.
It was said that there was nothing of value in Buoncovento…I would have to disagree, it was gorgeous little hamlet.. In fact a night in Buoncovento would of been justified rather than two nights in Pieve & Salti.
I enjoyed also the last days walk through Tuscan territory and visiting the musuem in Murlo.
Breakfasts exceeded my expectations, Alfresco dinning every night, I have some great photographs and wonderful memories that will last me for the rest of my life. If you are a whinger this walk is not for you!
If I was asked to do this walk again….Absolutely YES! Overall BRILLIANT!

Loved the concept, and the accommodations were excellent. Directions were mostly good except need updating a little. Last day’s directions to Muro and adjacent town were quite confusing.
All in all, a great experience and we would recommend it to our friends!

Macs Adventure Walking provide excellent guidance and pre-trip information. The organisation out there was superb. Accommodation did vary from outstanding to moderate, luckily more of the outstanding.
