Comments about The Ridgeway Walking Holiday :
In August 2011, we did the part from Avebury to Goring (four days / five nights option.) Very pleasant views of countryside, far removed from the reality of built-up southern England. We are not seasoned walkers and are in our early 70′s, so found that we were quite tired at the end of each day – particularly because, of necessity, all the accommodation was another two or so km off (and down from) the Ridgeway. [...] The accommodations were interesting and excellent. With one exception, the couriers did indeed transport our bags as planned. The exception was on our first day – the owner of our B&B in Avebury ended up having to drive our things to the next B&B, for which we were most appreciative.

Comments about The Ridgeway Walking Holiday :
This was our third National Trail holiday with Macs. We were given a varying selection of accommodation from basic pubs (one of which was not very clean) to a luxurious barn. This is one of the great sides to not booking the accommodation yourself, you don’t really know what you’ll find at the end of the day. The cases were delivered along with one of our party who was unable to walk for three days. The Ridgeway is very well marked and the guide books easy to follow. You must however be aware that the path does not go through many towns or villages, hence the title I have given this review, and lunch breaks and the evening accommodation is often a mile or more down from the path which is a mile or more back up again. We were however often offered lifts by our hosts in the morning. Plan your lunch stops carefully. Barbury Castle does not have a cafe anymore and several of the pubs en route are shut or not open at lunch time! The path itself climbs gradually through open country for the first part then through more green areas and woodland. The scenery is stunning. At the end of a days walking most of our hosts provided comfortable rooms and had recommendations about where to eat (or not!) if they did not provide food themselves. All in all we had a lovely time walking from 7 – 18 miles a day. Our holiday was well organised as usual and very enjoyable.

Comments about The Ridgeway Walking Holiday :
This was a very good holiday for us, a journey with a real purpose and a confidence builder (that we still possess the stamina to take on these adventures). The need to descend from the Ridgeway each evening to our accommodation and and to climb up to it the next morning was initially tough but we were eventually able to take this in our stride. NB the guidebook was out of date in respect of the eating facilities in Letcombe Regis. The Greyhound Inn had closed down and our landlady had to take us to Wantage to get an evening meal. But that in itself was a bonus as Wantage proved to be a particularly interesting place with its Betjeman connections.
