The Best Places to Walk in October

As the days get shorter and the air a bit chillier in the Northern Hemisphere, either choose to escape it all with a walking holiday in warmer climes, or simply wrap up and enjoy the wonderful hues of the most colourful season of the year. Here is our selection of the best places to walk in October:

Barolo Vineyard Trail

Costigliole d'Asti

Piedmont in Italy is a delight at this time of year, especially if you like your walking with a touch of indulgence on the side! White truffle season kicks off in October, and Alba (the start of this route) hosts the legendary white truffle fair at weekends in October and November. The vines of the local vineyards begin to turn golden, and the whole region takes a deep breath as the busy wine harvest season comes to an end. Oh, and of course relaxing with a glass of one of Italy’s most prestigious red wines, the Barolo, after an invigorating day's walk is just divine.

Gran Canaria

Views to Serradero

The Canary Islands are the quintessenial year-round destination in Europe. More famous for beaches and bars, the interior and lesser known coastlines of Gran Canaria offer perfect conditions for challenging but very reqarding hiking, and an insight into Island life beyond the usual tourist traps. October offers slightly cooler temperatures for comfortable hiking, and average rainfall remains at the lower levels of the summer months. The volcanic formation Roque Nublo is one of the most iconic sights on the island. More information on Walking Gran Canaria's Island of Contrasts:

Nepal

Prayer flags ama dablamOctober is in the midst of a drier and warmer season in Nepal, and ideal for taking on a classic trek such as Everest Base Camp (one to brag about for years to come!).  Nepal has an adventure for everyone, from the hardcore hiker to the culture-vulture, and we even offer discovery tours for families.

Vermont

Visit Vermont

Early October is the best time to go (the first two weeks), but book early. This is the most popular season as visitors flock to see the wonderful rich coloured foliage. Rolling farmland, pristine lakes, hilltop views in the Appalacian mountains, and traditional country inns combine to make exploring New England on a walking holiday a delight. The famous fall / autumn colours (depending which side of the pond you're from!) create a picture perfect landscape that has to be seen to be believed, and the cosy inns with great hospitality are the ultimate retreat following a day's hike.

Into the Woods

If you're just looking for a day walk, we highly recommend heading to the woods to watch the colours change. Nothing beats getting wrapped up warm with friends or family and heading out to enjoy the best of the season on a forest walk, before enjoying a warm drink and sweet treat on your return (of course). Of course there are still plenty of walking holiday opportunities in favourite destinations throughout the British Isles too, but be prepared to wrap up warm, and go early in the month as the daylight hours can get restrictive towards the end of October. You can't beat a "wee dram" after an invigorating day on the trail though. Wherever you choose to walk in October, it is a great season to explore, so don't hibernate yet!
