Comfort Levels

Our trips have a variety of comfort ratings, depending on the location or the style of adventure you want. Whatever the level, we carefully select accommodation to ensure you receive a friendly welcome and that your stay is a comfortable, authentic experience.

Most holidays are in the comfortable range, including nights in friendly, independent or family-run hotels, guest houses, or B&Bs. No matter what the type of lodging, it will always be chosen for charm, cleanliness, and those special touches that make you feel at home. Some holidays are graded superior, with a little extra luxury, and some contain more basic accommodation, particularly in more remote locations where mountain refuges or camps may house your bed for the night.

Where you stay shapes your overall experience, and can leave you with some of the best memories, anything from the best breakfast pastries you've ever had, to an evening in front of the fireplace spent with a convivial host. Rest-assured, we've selected the best-suited accommodation for each night's rest.

Basic

Basic

Accommodations are comfortable and will meet all of your basic needs. These may include Mountain Huts and limited B&B’s. They might be rustic, and an en-suite or private bathroom is not always available. Sometimes located in a remote area, these accommodations could also be shared with other travellers. Whilst they may be more basic in facilities, they are big on welcome.

Comfortable

Comfortable

Our comfortable accommodations include charming B&B’s and guest houses, as well as small hotels and inns. These are usually family-run and always clean, comfortable and well-located. This is the grade of accommodation you can expect on most trips, and we prioritise a warm welcome when selecting your lodgings. After a day on the trail, we know that you need the peace of mind that your board has been hand-picked for comfort & charm.

Superior

Superior

We use three or four star hotels and luxurious B&B’s to welcome you to our Superior accommodations. Many are renowned for their excellent cuisine and all offer a warm reception to walkers, traditional hospitality and an authentic experience. Holidays might be described as "In Comfort" to let you know that they have a higher specification of overnight accommodation. All the warmth and comfort of our standard lodgings, with a little extra special feel.

Luxury

Luxury

Luxury accommodation comprises carefully chosen 4 star stylish hotels, all ideally located to offer the best service for our walkers and cyclists. We specifically choose each 4 star hotel for the superior view rooms, high levels of service and hospitality, along with the delicious local cuisine on offer. You can view our ‘In Style’ collection of tours, to explore some of our luxury options.

Various

Some trips include a variety of accommodation styles. For instance, whilst on a trek in Nepal, you will stay in traditional mountain lodges in remote areas. Toilets and washing facilities may be shared and you may be in twin-share rooms. However, while in Kathmandu, you can stay at the 5 star hotels opposite the Royal Palace. Or on the Larapinta Trail, you may be in a four star hotel to start your adventure, and remote eco-camps for your trek.

Excellent communication, itinerary well presented and no issues when booking into the various accommodation along the route. Route tips provided were well selected and worth looking at prior to planning your travels from point to point

A really good experience. First time we (party of 4) have used a walking company - as opposed to making our own arrangements - and it did not disappoint.

Great service from Macs Adventures. Everything on our trip ran like clockwork and at every stop the accommodate was of an extremely high standard. My only slight negative was that I didn't find the app particularly useful, but this didn't have any impact on our trip and I would certainly highly recommend this company.

I would use Macs Adventures again. It was all very easy to use and has opened up a new part of the world to us. The logistics details can be tricky to find so many clicks in when signal is weak, and we nearly missed a cab. Some local knowledge might have made things even smoother particularly around minicab services. Telling three separate sets of clients that their taxi will be at 5pm, when you know there is only one cab in town and the pandemic precludes ride-sharing, is a recipe for confusion. Also, I strongly advise that those setting up cab rides back to the mainland from Lindisfarne think carefully about tides and safe crossing times. I don't think it's reasonable to charge clients extra for changing a cab time if the agency set it up for a stupid time in the first place.

Super organisation of our trip, very helpful in every way.
  • Ms Katharine Wale 23/07/2021
Enjoyed the whole experience of moving from place to place and staying in different hotels/b&bs. Overall consistent quality of accommodation and food. Staff at Macs were helpful.

    I would use them again.

Fantastic trip to Quito and Galapagos. We were greeted at the Quito airport and everything was seamless after that. Our guide in Quito (Pablo) did a great job of giving us a overview of the Old Town in half a day. He got us on our way to the Galapagos and through all the formalities. Upon arrival we were whisked into a VIP waiting area while waiting on the formalities on that end. After that we met our guide Vicky. Within 10 minutes we were in a boat and 5 minutes after that we were Kayaking and then snorkeling. The accommodations ranged from a rustic lodge to modern hotels and all were superb. Vicky guided us through the entire trip and adapted the plans to our interests. We saw amazing wildlife, swam with Sea Lions, sharks, turtles, etc., hiked a volcano and lots more. The people are very welcoming and friendly. There were VERY few tourists there which was nice. Our guide was superb. Very knowledgeable, passionate about the islands, patient, flexible and fun to hang out with! I highly recommend this trip for those who want to see the Galapagos in an informative, active way. Some tips: - We brought our own masks and although they were always provided it was nice to have our own. We did not use wetsuits but they were always available for rent for about $5-10 - You will be in an out of the water almost every day, quick drying clothes are essential. Stuff dries slowly so alternating items is helpful - Get good sunscreen, you will use a lot of it. Hats and sunshirts also recommended - Be prepared for 9-10 hour days. They are active but fun. - There are multiple boat trips. one was over 2 hours in open sea. If you are prone to motion sickness bring what works best for you with you (Note: there is a daily flight in a small plane if needed) - Believe what you read about the internet being spotty and slow. Do not count on it even if you are on the cell network - Take plenty of cash for tips, drinks, shopping etc. We had mixed success with ATMs on the islands (and in Quito). You will need cash and credit cards are usually not accepted and when they are expect to pay a 15% fee. - Do take a lightweight rain jacket. While the lowlands are fairly dry the highlands are often rainy

My brother (81) and I (66) have just completed walking the Gt Glen Way, a 5 day walk covering some 86 miles. Macs organised our b&bs for us, transported our luggage from one B&B to the next, and delivered all the appropriate maps and instructions. They did a superb job! Of the six b&bs that we stayed in, four were absolutely excellent and the other two were quite respectable. Without exception, the breakfasts were lovely, setting us up for the day's ramble. Overall, it was a great holiday and terrific service from Macs.

Everything was organised and well planned including the walks and baggage pickups. However some of the accommodation was a let down. Brantfell House - I couldn’t fault it. Excellent!!! Old School House - Hosts were fantastic however accommodation was uncomfortable (outdoor furniture / uncomfortable bed / very small, weak shower) not what you need two days in to a walking holiday The Beeches - Too far out of town centre (bus ride) and the noise from the water systems was too loud. Literally every time anyone in the building flushed the toilet in the building the noise woke you up. It was impossible to sleep through. I woke up really tired from the small amount of sleep and had to change my plans for that day. Not great!

Efficient service. Nice to hand over organisation to a 3rd party. Warning of rail transport issues on Sundays at starting point shows that someone was paying attention in run up to start of holiday which was booked 4 months earlier. Accommodation was all booked and I was expected.

Places we stayed at , made us very welcome and gave excellent advice where to go, that would interest us. We did the Norther Scotland 500 clockwise, which whilst Covid restrictions where on, found we were going against most tourists. As foreign tourists were unable to visit Britain, the roads were a lot quieter .

Macs Adventure and the West Highland Way, June 2021 Our small walking group has recently returned from the West Highland Way. This was superbly organised by Macs. The instructions, accompanying information and directions to the various accommodations were clear and informative. The standard of accommodation throughout was excellent. Particular reference should be made to the accommodation at Tyndrum. Here not only was the welcome very friendly, but due to Covid and the temporary closedown of the accommodation at Bridge of Orchy and the necessity of taxi transfers, everything was seamless from ‘our end’. Macs and the people in Tyndrum had made sure that there was minimal impact to us with no expenses incurred. An additional night in Tyndrum with a taxi transfer to Bridge of Orchy suited us perfectly with one less baggage transfer. Our small group also benefited from being placed in a separate cottage with all the facilities: kitchen, living and dining room with TV. We were able to get a takeaway meal from the village on one of the evenings. Heather (at Tigh na Fraoch, Tyndrum) was a superb host; indeed, all of our hosts and taxi drivers could not have been more helpful. The luggage transfers were smooth and always at our destinations when we arrived. We have travelled at home and abroad with Macs on a number of occasions – in Scotland, England, the Camino (‘French’ and Portuguese) and hope to be in a position to do so again next year! A thoroughly professional travel company which always accommodates a number of our requests (an extra night here and there to take in the scenery and recuperate!). Most of our walks have required some sort of ‘bespoke’ element and this has always been arranged to our satisfaction. The walk itself is highly popular and passes through some splendid countryside and it allowed some respite from the demands of lockdowns and the pandemic. We have no hesitation in recommending Macs to all interested in the outdoors, superbly professional and friendly. Rhona, our contact at Macs, had booked the perfect tailor-made trip for us. A. From start to finish everything was perfect. Excellent communication, lovely accommodation throughout, faultless bag pick up/delivery. My 7th trip with Macs Adventure and it won't be my last. Most highly recommended.

Excellent service. The app worked really well and where the accommodation was not close enough to the path the hosts were happy to pick up and drop odd where necessary.

    Great accommodation and experience throughout.
