La Rioja is a wine lover’s paradise, and this loop cycle around northern Spain is full of first class vineyards and pretty winemaking villages with countless cellars and bodegas to quench your thirst. Cycle against a backdrop of the rolling Sierra de Cantabria, along the lovely Ebro river and Camino de Santiago. At the end of rewarding days in the saddle, stay in truly special properties, hand-picked for their ambience and location, including a 12th century stone parador and a modern 4-star spa hotel, where as well as sampling a drop or two of local vino, you can indulge in relaxing olive oil and wine treatments.

Grade & Terrain

This cycle tour is graded easy to moderate, as you will be cycling 34-37 km each day, with a couple of undulating sections which are manageable.  You should have a good level of fitness to make the most out of this tour. You will cycle on a combination of minor roads, rural paved roads and occasionally dirt roads. The paths are not technically difficult. The routes chosen assure that you’ll always cycle with as little traffic as possible.

Navigation

We supply you with with a GPS unit which is loaded with the tracks, so you will be able to easily follow the route. You will be provided with daily maps and information about the area. You will have a welcome meeting with a local guide on arrival at your first hotel, and they will be able to show you how to use the GPS unit and are there to talk you through the route and assist you with any questions you may have.     

Accommodation Information

6 Nights accommodation is included in your trip, in rooms with private bathroom.

The hand-picked hotels featured on this tour offer great value and a warm welcome to cyclists—you’ll be staying in some truly unique properties, including a 17th century building and a parador whose origins date from the 12th century. The accommodation we normally use is detailed in the itinerary however is subject to availability at the time of booking; alternative properties of the same or better standard may be offered.  You can add extra nights at any time during your trip.

Meals

6 Breakfasts are included in your arrangements. Dinners and lunches are not included and you can either stop en route, buy packed lunch from your accommodation (order the night before), or buy provisions in local shops/markets along the way. Drinks are not included but available at all overnight accommodation.

This trip is available to solo cyclists. Single rooms are available and a single supplement is payable.

Getting to the Start

Getting to and from Logrono

By Air:  Bilbao or Zaragoza are the best airports for the tour. There are many carriers flying into Bilbao Airport in particular, including scheduled and low cost airlines. 

From Bilbao there are around 4 buses a day to Logroño, duration approx. 3h30.

From Zaragoza there are around 6 buses a day to Logroño, duration approx. 3hrs. 

Alternatively, both are around 1h30 mins by car — please contact us for a transfer quotation.

Baggage Transfer

Baggage transfers included in your arrangements. Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation each night (please limit your bags to up to 20kg per person).

General Information

The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes. Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat and sun screen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard cycling gear such as good cycling footwear, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.

Equipment

You can hire a hybrid rental bike for the tour (optional extra, supplement payable). Bikes have 27 gears and disc brakes. They are Ghost models, full-equipped with pannier, kilometre counter and a tool kit. 

Travel Insurance

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.
