Macarella Bay, an impression of Menorca's stunning coastline
×

Highlights

  • Exploring countless golden beaches and turquoise bays on two wheels.
  • Cycling trails to rocky capes, home to photogenic lighthouses.
  • Relaxing in the shade of a pine tree, with the waves lapping on the beach.
  • Stopping off at pretty towns and harbours, for a refreshing drink.
  • Soft sand between your toes and bright-blue water to cool off in.

Menorca is a true Mediterranean gem— home to over 100 simply stunning beaches and hidden coves where you can park your bike and take a cooling dip in the crystal-clear water. Cycle between lovely unspoilt towns and experience what is considered by many to be the most authentic and laid-back of the Balearics.

On this trip you’ll follow rural roads and really explore Menorca; from the gentle farmland of the interior to peaceful bays and rocky coastline where you’ll discover picturesque lighthouses and lunar landscapes. What’s more, you’ll stay in charming properties, including a traditional Menorquin finca, and a superb seafront spa hotel.

Day 1: Arrive Mahón and overnight

Arrive on the unspoilt Balearic island of Menorca, and take a short shuttle bus or taxi ride to the eastern side of the island, and your hotel at Mahón.  Mahón is the capital city of Menorca, and has a lovely vibrant atmosphere; wander along the bustling quayside which is the perfect spot for an alfresco drink.

Our local guide will talk you through the cycling days ahead and if you are hiring a bike, they will ensure it is a good fit for you.

Overnight: Mahón

Day 2: South coast cycle to Alaior

After breakfast set off on a gentle ride around Mahón. Visit the impressive La Mola fortress  at the entrance to the natural harbour, and venture into the city centre.

Later today, head towards Cales Coves where you’ll find Bronze-Age caves carved into the rock above a stunning turquoise coastline.  Continue via the small beach town of Cala’n Porter before reaching Torre d’en Galmés with its Talayotic (1400BC) stone ruins.  A great first day in the saddle ends in the heart of the island at Alaoir.

Cycle: 41 km, route profile

Overnight: Alaior

Day 3: Loop cycle to Cap de Faváritx lighthouse

Today you’ll cycle a loop to the rugged northern coast of Menorca. On the way pass through pine and holm oak forests and lush farmer’s fields.  Visit the rocky Cap de Faváritx, with its lone lighthouse nestled in a distinctively lunar landscape. Return to Alaior on a very scenic and delightfully rural route.

Cycle: 41 km, route profile

Overnight: Alaior

Day 4: North coast cycle via Cap de Cavallería to Port Fornells

A day of beautiful beaches awaits! Head out towards Cap de Cavallería with its photogenic lighthouse, perched high above the ocean.  There is a lovely white sand beach at the foot of the cliff so why not take a pleasant walk down to the water’s edge - soak your feet and enjoy the silky sand between your toes!

Ahead is another of Menorca’s pristine beach areas at Binimel, with its quiet lagoons and rolling dunes.  Your final destination of the day is Port Fornells in the north of the island.

Cycle: 38km, route profile

Overnight: Fornells

Day 5: North-south cycle to Cala Galdana Bay

Set off along the old Royal Path (Camí Reial). Cross the island from north to south, passing through gently undulating countryside and the lovely towns of Es Mercadal and Es Migjorn Gran.

Reach the pretty Sant Tomás beach, then on to the yet more impressive Cala Galdana—a huge horseshoe-shaped bay edged by high cliffs dotted with pines and magnificent private houses.

Why not take a pre-dinner dip, freshen up at your seafront hotel, then head out to dinner at one of the fantastic harbour-side restaurants.

Cycle: 35 km, route profile

Overnight: Cala Galdana

Day 6: Cycle via Turqueta Bay and Macarella caves to Ciutadella

The day begins with a 45 minute private transfer (including your bikes) to the start of todays ride. Ahead of you is a day exploring the azure blue waters of Menorca’s south coast. The aptly-named Turqueta Bay awaits you, followed by a visit to the Macarella caves. Your day ends at Ciutadella on the west coast where you’ll spend your final two nights.

With its golden limestone facades and medieval cathedral, this city has a rich history of feudal lords and Turkish pirates! Spend the evening discovering quaint squares filled with outdoor cafés and designer boutiques. Take your pick from the excellent eateries that edge the harbour, surrounded by medieval ramparts.

Cycle: 31 km, route profile

Overnight: Ciutadella

Day 7: Loop cycle to Cala Morell

A hearty breakfast will prepare you for a day of cycling along the wildest coast of Menorca.  Pedal along routes through woodland and lowlands, lakes, dunes and cool gorges, between unspoilt beaches.

Visit Algaiarens and the small natural harbour of Cala Morell,. Here you’ll find 14 man-made burial caves, used from 1700BC until the 2nd Century AD. Return to Ciutadella for your final night and reflect on a fantastic week’s cycling.

Cycle: 36 km, route profile

Overnight: Ciutadella

We are often asked the following questions and I hope that you will find the answers useful. Don't hesitate to contact one of our Spain specialists if you have any further queries.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this area is popular, and some of the accommodations are small so don't have a lot of rooms available, if you are inflexible with your dates.

How fit do I need to be?

This cycle tour is graded easy to moderate, ascents and descent are minimal (please see the day-by-day itinerary for a daily trip profile) and you cycle between 35-41 km  each day.  You should have a reasonable level of fitness to make the most out of this tour. You will follow a combination of minor roads, asphalt rural roads and occasionally along dirt roads. The routes are not technically difficult.

How does it work with the baggage transfers?

You'll be given luggage labels to attach to your bags, and they will be transferred each day between accommodations, so that you only cycle with the essential things you need during the day.  We suggest that you limit your luggage to up to 20kg per person.

What equipment do I need?

You will need normal cycling clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers and warm clothes in the early and late season. A detailed kit list will be provided in your information pack.

When is the best time of year?

This tour is available from March to mid-June, and from mid-September to early November. The summer months of July and August are the hottest and it is too hot to cycle.

What are the cycle paths like?

You will cycle on a combination of small roads (asphalt) and dirt tracks (not cycle paths/green ways). The paths are not technically difficult. A key aim is that you’ll cycle always with as little traffic as possible. As you enter the larger towns you will find the route busier.

What happens if I have a problem with my bike?

You are expected to be able to take care of minor repairs and punctures. In the case of a major mechanical problem we would send our representative to assist, or you would be directed/assisted to the nearest bike shop.

Which is the best airport?

Mahón is the best airport for the tour. There are many carriers flying into Mahón Airport, including scheduled and low cost airlines.  Airlines flying to Menorca from across the UK include easyJet, Thomas Cook, Monarch, Thomson Airways, Iberia, Jet2.com.

Upon arrival you can either take a shuttle bus/public transport or a taxi to Mahón, or contact us to arrange a private transfer (supplement payable).

At the end of your cycle tour you can take public transport (or transfer at a supplement) back to the airport; it is 50 mins by road from Ciutadella to the airport. Further information will be given in your pre-departure information pack.

Biking in paradise

We had the most positive experience for Minorca by Bike, right from the start! Our guide met with us first thing and detailed our routes for us. There was exceptional organization and sensational points of interest laid out for us. Xavier provides us with everything we needed and more! The bike rentals were perfect and durable. The mileage was high enough for a challenge but low enough for time to sight-see and lay out at the spectacular beaches. The sights of the island were strikingly beautiful and shockingly unreal. Our agrotourisimo/bed and breakfast in Alaior was one of the best stays we had. Jesus and his wife will take care of anything you need and wow you with their phenomenal breakfasts. We were overwhelmed by the scenery and landscapes of this well-preserved treasure of an island. Minorca has phenomenal city centers to visit, shop, eat, drink and soak in all the history.

Amazing Trip

5

Excellent fun holiday. Local support ie luggage transfer etc was well organised and professional. Accommodation was perfect- a mixture of different types of hotels but all with their good points. The bikes were quite heavy but then coped well with one or two dirt tracks to the beautiful beaches. Thank you Macs Adventures. We'll be back!

Excellent intro to cycle holiday...

5

The routes were very interesting and led to completely different styles of accommodation, all of which were well appointed. The local guide, Xavier was very informative, helpful and friendly, as were all of the local people I came across during the trip. A thoroughly enjoyable week which led to some exciting discoveries around Menorca.

A fantastic cycling experience in beautiful environment

5

Very well organised with great local support i.e. baggage transfer and support in case of issues with bikes etc. We were however a bit disappointed by the quality of the bikes. The gears did not engage very well and at one point on the last day we needed to get the mechanic to fix an issue relating to one of the bike's gears. Accommodation was very well researched and we were delighted with all the places we stayed. The routes were perfectly gauged in terms of distance, points of interest and quietness of roads. All in all a fantastic experience!

We had a great time, Menorca has got some lovely coves and we covered a lot of the island in a week. Meeting the locals who ran the accommodation was a highlight, as was the food they cooked us!
