This bike & boat tour transports you from the historic city of Haarlem, to Keukenhof flower park, and to “Zaanse Schans” an open-air museum where you can see typical Dutch scenery of windmills, an authentic village, and a traditional cheese maker.

Combine time on your gorgeous boat (dining on delicious cuisine) with easy flat cycling through idyllic and traditional Dutch landscapes.

Important: The Aalsmeer flower auction is closed during weekends and on public holidays. Although this is an optional visit on day 4 of your itinerary and there are plenty of alternative activities, please be aware that on the 2020 departure dates of April 10 (barge Fluvius), March 26 (barge Magnifique II), March 25, April 2 and April 15 (barge Magnifique III) a visit to the flower auction is not possible.

Day 1: Arrive Amsterdam & Embarkation

Your comfortable river cruiser awaits you in Amsterdam’s harbour and the crew will welcome you onboard at 2:00 PM. Once you are settled in, begin sailing to Zaandam.

Upon arrival the Tour Leader takes you on a walk through Zaandam, a typically Dutch town with brightly-coloured houses and famous for its windmills.

Day 2: Cycle to Haarlem via “Zaanse Schans”

A short ride brings you to the “Zaanse Schans" Open Air Museum which includes more windmills, an authentic Dutch wooden village, clog maker and much more. Return to your boat by means of a bike ride.

This afternoon you can choose to either stay and cruise on the boat or take a ride to Haarlem. A short city walk is included this evening.

Cycle: 24 or 34 km

Overnight: Haarlem

Day 3: Cycle to Oude Wetering via Keukenhof

After breakfast ride along dedicated cycle paths to the "Keukenhof“, arguably the most famous flower park in the world and where you can admire hundreds of thousands of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and many other flowers in full bloom.

After this wonderful visit, get back in the saddle to cycle to the small village of Oude Wetering where your floating hotel will be waiting for you.

Cycle: 38 or 55 km

Overnight: Oude Wetering

Day 4: Cycle to Amsterdam

You’re in for a real treat this morning; an early visit (06:30 AM) to the biggest flower auction in the world at Aalsmeer. Millions of flowers are auctioned off here and instantly sent out to all corners of the world. Return to the boat where you will be served a delicious brunch!

On your last afternoon cycle past wetlands and into the centre of Amsterdam where you can visit some of its famous sites, including the flower market and the Anne Frank Museum, or where you can simply amble along the cobbled streets by the canals.

Cycle: 28 km

Overnight: Amsterdam

Day 5: Disembarkation & Onward Travel

Disembarkation will begin after your last breakfast onboard and is possible until 9.30AM. You can connect to your onward journey from here, details will be provided in your client documentation.

Availability

You can start your Tulips in Holland Bike & Boat tour on selected dates in April and May. Please check the website for departure dates.

Time of Year

As this Bike & Boat tour only operates during spring to enjoy the blooms of the famous flower fields, the weather can still be unpredictable. Whilst your boat is made to be cosy and comfortable, it is worth taking a few extra layers for changeable conditions and to be prepared for rain with waterproofs. It is important to book early as these departures are limited.

Grade & Terrain

Almost completely flat, this cycle tour is graded easy. The daily distance ranges between approximately 15-40 km. This tour is well-suited to those who have never taken a cycling holiday before as it is on the level and you also have the option of skipping the cycling and relaxing on board. You will be biking mostly on dedicated cycle paths alongside canals, rivers and through the iconic cities and towns of the region. Roads near larger towns and cities are likely to busier. Please always be mindful of other road-users, especially on sections of the route when the road is shared with traffic.

Navigation

Your Tour Leader will accompany you on the daily cycling tours, therefore you will not be required to navigate yourself.

Bikes

The bikes on board are 7-gear unisex hybrid bikes with pedal brakes and are included in the cost of your trip. There are also E-bikes available upon request (at a supplement). All rental bikes are equipped with a pannier (saddle bag) although helmets are not available on board, we strongly recommend that you bring your own helmet with you for safety reasons.

Due to very restricted space on board there is limited availability to bring your own bike – please check with us.

Travel Insurance

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable Travel Insurance which covers you for the activity, emergency evacuation and hospital care.

Fantastic

Fantastic trip, great accommodation and good quality bikes. Guides really knowledgeable with great sense of humour. I had wanted to see tulips and I saw lifetimes worth-absolutely stunning. Met some wonderful people which really added to the whole experience. I would definitely do the trip again, and would certainly use Macs Adventures to try another trip too.

A great introduction to a cycling holiday

For someone who hasn't peddled a bike for 2 years, this was a perfect holiday, just the right amount of cycling to feel well exercised but not exhausted! The accommodation, food and staff on the Magnifique 11 barge were all top quality. The bikes were excellent and our very friendly and caring tour guide, Fred, was attentive and sensitive as to how his group (cycling along behind him, like ducklings!) was faring. Our travel companions on board were a lovely mix from USA, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Canada. It really was a great few days and all four of my group had a great time and loved it!
