Swedish Lapland: Northern Lights Short Break

  • Hunting for the Northern Lights in Abisko National Park
  • Enjoy a candlelit gourmet meal at the Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja
  • Explore fairy-tale forests on snow-shoes or cross-country skis
  • Try your hand at husky sledding with the help of a friendly local guide
  • Relax in your cosy chalet, enjoying views of picturesque Lake Torneträsk

Enjoy a relaxing winter getaway on this Northern Lights short break. The village of Abisko is nestled deep in Sweden’s arctic circle. It enjoys its own micro-climate and in turn has some of the clearest skies in Sweden; the perfect place to increase your chances of seeing the elusive Aurora Borealis.

Stay 4 nights in Abisko and spend an evening at the Aurora Sky Station, located 900m a.s.l. Enjoy a gourmet 4-course meal here before setting off on a guided tour around the station, keeping your eyes peeled for the magical lights show. Take part in a number of optional activities; guided snow-shoe treks, husky sledding or even ice-climbing. There are also easy, waymarked snow-shoe and cross-country skiing trails around the national park, which can be followed without a guide. Or simply relax in your cosy chalet and soak up the peaceful wintry atmosphere of this unique wilderness.

Day 1 Arrive Abisko

Kiruna is the closest airport to Abisko and is accessible via Stockholm. From Kiruna, it is just a short train or bus ride to Abisko (approx 1.5hrs)

Abisko has just 85 permanent residents but it is often buzzing with visitors from all over the world, regardless of the time of year. It is also home to the Abisko Scientific Research Station, an important centre for study into Arctic ecology and climate change.

Check into your private chalet and settle in. Familiarise yourself with the village and perhaps take a stroll around the lake before heading to dinner at the on-site restaurant.

Dinner & Overnight: Abisko Mountain Station

Day 2 Day at leisure, evening excursion to the Aurora Sky Station

Linger over a leisurely buffet breakfast this morning. You may wish to take it easy today and save your energy for this evening’s trip.

Take a gentle stroll around the village, or hire snow-shoes for some easy trails through fairy-tale forests blanketed in pristine snow. Warm up and relax in the mountain station sauna before getting ready for your excursion to the Sky Station. Take a chairlift to the station located at 900m above sea-level where a locally- sourced gourmet meal awaits. Your guide will explain the science behind the Northern Lights, while you tour the station, always keeping an eye out for them. After the tour, you will have some time to explore the station and mountain at your own leisure before returning to the mountain station by chairlift.

Included Activity: Gourmet Dinner and tour of the Aurora Sky Station

Overnight: Abisko Mountain Station

Day 3 Day at leisure, optional activities

Why not sign up for one of the many guided excursions on offer. Join a cross-country ski trip, exploring the national park in the company of a knowledgeable local guide. Follow animal tracks through dense forests, stopping for a typical Swedish ’fika’ (a coffee break also involving cakes or pastries!), before heading back.

Alternatively, spend the day at your leisure, saving energy for a long night of Northern Light searching.

Dinner & Overnight: Mountain Station, Abisko

Day 4 Day at leisure, optional activities

Another day of choices. The most popular excursion in the area by far is a husky-sledding experience, and it’s easy to see why! Spending a couple of hours in the company of huskies in their natural habitat is a once in a lifetime experience. Whizz through forest and vast open land gliding over pristine white snow, learning the techniques behind a successful mush from your guide.

Spend the evening relaxing in the sauna, before enjoying one final dinner and night of Aurora spotting around the mountain station.

More strenuous activities like ice-climbing are also on offer for those looking for more of a challenge.
