Explore the stunning Blue Mountains and learn about the fascinating fauna, flora, and geology of this area on this adventure. Hike to sweeping views of the Grand Canyon, a narrow chasm that plunges 180 meters deep, and visit the base of the unique rock formation of the Three Sisters via the famous Giant Stairway. Listen for the distinct calls of the lyrebird and the whip-bird as you stroll through the lush rainforest in the Valley of the Waterfalls. In the evenings, explore the downtown area and art galleries of charming Blackheath, and enjoy dinner from a number of superb local restaurants.

What To Expect

This trip is suitable for experienced walkers that are comfortable with steep ascents and descents. The distances per day are not long, but the undulating terrain makes it a challenge along with the use of metal or wooden stairs with handrails. You should be sure-footed, have a head for heights and not suffer from vertigo to fully enjoy this trip. The Blue Mountains make up one million hectares of breathtaking waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, and eucalyptus forests. It is one of the largest and most intact regions of protected bushland of Australia.

Grade & Terrain

This walk is graded moderate to difficult with walks around 8 km/5 miles each day. There are sections with steep ascents and descents with rock steps and metal or wooden stairs with handrails. You can also expect dirt and rock paths interspersed with sandstone steps, rock ledges and overhangs, small bridges and stepping stone creek crossings.


As this is a self-guided walk you will be responsible for navigation, decision making and safety during your trip. You should be able to navigate easily with a map and compass. We supply you with route notes for the recommended routes, as well as access to our smartphone navigation app along with GPX tracks, so you will have no problem following the route each day. 

Accommodation Information

You will stay in guesthouses along the way at both Blackheath and Katoomba. In Blackheath, you will stay in a 3-star guesthouse built in the 1900s. Your last two nights, in Katoomba, will be spent at a beautifully restored 1920s mountain home.

Single Rooms and Solo Travelers 

Single sleeping arrangements can be organized but please note this trip is not available to solo travelers.

This walk can be done all year round. From June to August, the temperatures can be cool with an average daily high temperature of 13 degrees Celcius/56 degrees Fahrenheit.

By Air: Sydney International Airport is the most convenient airport, with various international airlines operating here.

By Train: Trains run from Sydney’s Central Station to Blackheath every hour. Schedules and fares can be viewed on the Transport NSW website.

Getting from the End

By Air: Sydney International Airport is the most convenient airport, with various international airlines operating here.

By Train: Trains run from Katoomba to Sydney's Central Station every hour. Schedules and fares can be viewed on the Transport NSW website.

Baggage Transfer

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight accommodation.
