Austria Travel Restrictions and Resources

15 Sept 2021

Austria is again open to American travelers from the US, and we are offering our active tours there.

Travel Restrictions

Effective 15 Sept 2021, the Austrian Embassy in Washington states that for US travelers: UNVACCINATED persons arriving from the U.S. will continue to be allowed to enter Austria but MUST pre-register, present a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival (see requirements below) and subsequently observe 10 days of mandatory quarantine. Proof of Vaccination required: Yes, to avoid quarantine.

What can I expect when I arrive in Austria?

Life in Austria is returning to normal. Shops, hotels, and restaurants are open. Like in much of Europe, restrictions continue with the use of masks and social distance measures in place. To check in to a hotel or restaurant, you must present a negative Covid test or proof of vaccination. This is due for review, so do check here for any updates.

What’s it like to travel to Austria?

As with many other places, you can expect extra hygiene measures and will be required to follow signage and distancing protocols in airports, and wear masks in designated areas. Check with your airline on their individual measures.

Where can I get Covid tested in Austria?

Because tests are required to enter many public spaces such as restaurants, they are very widely available in Austria, with many hotels offering tests and Teststraßen (public test centers) in lots of locations. Read more >

Returning from Austria to the USA:

You will need to get tested (PCR or Antigen) no more than 3 days before you travel by air into the United States (US) and show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight, or be prepared to show documentation of recovery (proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from your healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).
