Fitness & special equipment
How in-shape should I be for an adventure vacation?
This really depends on the trip. We offer quite a variety of tour grades to help you select the right level of activity. Always be honest with yourself about your abilities and it never hurts to train for an adventure vacation.
You'd be surprised at what you can achieve going at your own pace on one of our independent adventures. Your Destination & Adventure Specialist is the best person to ask about your specific trip.
Do I need special equipment?
No, you don't need special technical equipment, although your information pack will always point you in the right direction. Keep in mind that you'll be outside most of the time, so always be prepared for changing weather.
If you're new to adventure travel and on an easier or moderate trip, don't feel the need to spend a fortune on fancy gear. That said, we can't stress enough the importance of comfortable and practical clothing, sturdy footwear, and a fitted bike helmet.
For the seasoned adventurer, we may recommend specific gear for some of the more remote or strenuous routes, but we don't currently offer any technical climbs.
Booking a tour with us
How does the booking process work?
We require a 20% deposit to start booking your trip, which is payable over the phone or online (the full balance is due six weeks prior to departure, so if you book less than six weeks in advance, your deposit will be the full tour cost).
Every trip is tailored just for you, so we confirm availability individually and book all of your accommodations and options before sending you a final (usually five working days).
If we are unable to accommodate you on your confirmed dates/tour – or an alternative of your choice – your deposit will be fully refunded.
Please don’t book any flights or travel until you get your final confirmation email from your Destination & Adventure Specialist.
How far in advance do I need to book?
We suggest that you book as soon as you decide on your dates. Each trip has busy seasons and, due to remote locations, accommodations can fill quickly.
What's included in each tour?
This varies from trip to trip, but in general, we include: accommodations, baggage transfers, comprehensive information packs and guidebooks (usually one set of trip documentation/info pack will be sent per booking. Additional sets are available upon request - please contact us for more details).
Expert organization and 24/7 support are always included.
On each tour webpage, click the “included" tab. On occasion, there are other things included to make your trip run smoothly, like rail travel or wine tasting!
What is "self-guided" and does it apply to all trips?
"Self-guided" means that you don't have a guide with you, although you’ll be well-equipped with all of the information you need to successfully follow your route. You’ll also have phone support from our offices as well as our local agents.
We believe thatself-guided travelcan't be beaten in terms of value, experience and sense of achievement. Most of our trips operate with this in mind. In remote/emerging destinations, or places where a local guide might add value, we do run guided and small group adventures. The goal, however, is always to discover and enjoy your own, unique and independent experience –as opposed to following a crowd of tourists.
How do baggage transfers work?
Many of our trips come with baggage transfers included, but please note that we are unable to offer this service on some of our remote trips. Check your exact tour inclusions to be sure.
You will drop overnight bags (one per person) by a certain time each morning in a designated area in your hotel or B&B. This allows you to walk freely with only a day pack of essentials.
Your baggage will be transferred to your next overnight location and will usually arrive before you do! Each information pack will advise you of any weight limits or restrictions.
