Natural wonders

1: First there are Iceland's volcanoes. Some are still very much alive, too. You’ll recall the worldwide airflight chaos a few years ago when an Icelandic volcano blew its top. But mostly, the volcanoes are stable and you can take a trip to see many of these amazing natural wonders. 

2: Waterfalls, glaciers and geysers. All these can be oohed and ahhed at in so many locations in this stunningly attractive country. 

3: And we haven’t mentioned the coastline yet. The rocky beaches with black lava sand make it look like a cross between New England and Hawaii.

Two continents for one

You can walk around the spot where North America meets Europe. It’s not so cold: The name makes you think of ice and cold – and it can be very cold but often in winter the temperatures are warmer than places such as New York, London and Paris. In summer, however, the weather is rarely warm enough to wear a t-shirt. We’re just making the point that while Iceland is almost at the top of the world near the Arctic Circle, winter temperatures can more favorable than you might imagine.

Open water swimming

Even in winter it’s possible to swim outdoors on pretty much every day of the year. How come? Because there’s a geothermal pool, created by those bubbling volcanoes, wherever you go. If you didn’t know, geothermal pools are water heated by energy from the earth. The Blue Lagoon: Close to the main highway near the airport – and on the very pricey side – this beautiful attraction is worth a visit if you’re pushed for time. The minerals in the lagoon are claimed to give it the milky blue quality and they are meant to be great for your skin.

The Northern Lights

Iceland is one of the best places in the world for seeing the aurora borealis, or the Northern Lights. This is a natural light show that's the result of a collision between sun and earth particles.

Capital fun

Reykjavik is the most northern capital in the world. Because of its position, the sun never really sets in summer, which gives it a unique all-day entertainment feel. The city is small and friendly and well worth a look around.

• Its highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, rises to 2,119 m
• More than 11% of the country is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe.
• Life expectancy is one of the highest in the world, extending to 81.3 years for women and 76.4 years for men.
• The tallest mountains in Iceland are Hvannadalshnjúkur at 2119m, Bárðarbunga at 2000m, Kverkfjöll at 1920m, Snæfell at 1833m and Hofsjökull at 1765 m.
• The largest glaciers are the massive 8300 km2 Vatnajökull and 953 km2 Langjökull Hofsjökull.
