A message from our founder

March always heralds the start of the summer travel season, so I thought it a fitting time to update you with all the goings-on here at Macs Adventure.

Without a doubt, it has been one of the busiest winters I’ve ever seen. Despite a nerve-wracking wobble at the end of 2021 caused by the Omicron wave, demand for our trips has bounced back beyond my wildest expectations. I am delighted that so many of you have trusted us with your travel plans for 2022.

The theme I hear from customers more than ever this year is the desire to reconnect with people and places they’ve missed so much during the pandemic, a feeling not lost on me. As soon as restrictions lifted last year, I headed to the stunning Silver Coast in Portugal, north of Lisbon, to visit my uncle. I kite-surfed, walked the wild beaches and, finally away from my (home) office, achieved mindfulness that had evaded me in the preceding eighteen months.

Later, at Christmas, I was able to take my family to one of my favourite places, the Valais in Switzerland. We skied and snowboarded, but our best day was when we strapped on our snowshoes and hiked up to the Hotel Weisshorn for an overnight at 2,237m. Blessed with blue skies and deep powder, reaching the isolated mountain hotel and enjoying a gourmet dinner together was a true Macs Moment.

As well as travelling again, I loved meeting up with Macs colleagues in the UK, US and Germany (after far too long on Zoom). Whilst we have decided to become a remote-first organisation and no longer require most of our staff to be office-based, we’re making a point of all getting together in person at least twice a year. The UK team recently convened in Scotland to enjoy time away from their screens and spend a day walking part of the West Highland Way (still our best-selling trip after 20 years). Neither the mist nor drizzle managed to dampen the spirits of the Macs Adventurers (although the weather did mean we reluctantly left ascending the summit of Conic Hill for another day).

The sense of optimism generated by the gradual lifting of restrictions and re-establishment of human connections is severely tainted by the war in Ukraine. All of us at Macs are shocked and saddened by the unfolding humanitarian crisis, and our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people. We understand these are worrying times too for our customers, but I can assure you that we don’t operate any trips in Russia, Ukraine or surrounding territories, nor do we have any suppliers or partners directly affected by the war. We monitor the situation carefully, and if you have any concerns about upcoming trips in Europe, our team is always here to answer your questions.

The events in Ukraine remind us what a privilege it is to be free to travel, and I am thinking more and more about how we at Macs Adventure positively impact all the people and places we visit. We already choose local suppliers over multinationals and offer plenty of public transport options. Travelling on two feet (or two wheels) is inherently a more environmentally friendly way to travel. But I’d love to know your thoughts on what we can do better as a business to become more sustainable and responsible; please do get in touch with your ideas.

So, if you are travelling with us in 2022, a heartfelt ‘Thank you.’ We can’t wait to hear about your moments that you can share with us here, and please do join the Macs Adventure Facebook Group, where you can meet like-minded travellers. If you’ve yet to book, we’re ready to help you. Some of our favourite trips, such as the Tour du Mont Blanc, are already sold out for peak dates, but our specialists have been known to work miracles and will always go the extra mile to get you that much-deserved break.

It’s time to welcome back travel.

Yours in adventure,
