Santiago De Compostela Cathedral Restoration 2019

We have received word from our partners in Spain that now the exterior restroations have been completed to the glorious Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, that internal restoration has begun.

The Cathedral is the end point for just about every variety of Camino and many pilgrims enjoyed taking the pilgrims mass inside the cathedral at the end of their voyage, but unfortuately, for now, this has been suspended. But fear not, there are alternatives.

Parts of the Cathedral will still be open to the public

The Cathedral: hours and access

The Cathedral will remain open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., so it will be accessible to pilgrims and visitors, although some parts will be closed off while the work is carried out. The ritual of hugging the Apostle can still be performed in its niche and descend to the apostolic crypt.

Access to the Cathedral

The only door that will remain open for access will be the Platerías door in the Platerías square. If you are facing the Cathedral, walk round to your right to find this door. You will likely notice a steady flow of people going this way, so it is easy to find. All of the other doors are for exclusive use for the works being carried out.

The Platerías door is beside the Fonte dos Cabalos (Fountain of Horses) and is unmistakable

They are looking to have this work finished within 12 months, so hopefully the restoration should be complete by 2020.

Unfortunately, during the restoration of the Cathedral the Botafumeiro will not take place.

Pilgrims’ mass

The daily pilgrims’ mass, at 12:00 noon, will be celebrated in the church of S. Francisco, just 350 m away from the Obradoiro Square. If you are in the main square facing the Cathedral, turn left and walk down Rua de San Francisco, past the Parador.

The church of Santa María Salomé (Rua Nova, 31 – 400m away from the Cathedral) will host the celebration of the Eucharist with the following hours:

  • 7:30 a.m, 9:00 a.m, 10:00 and 7:00 p.m from Mondays to Sundays.
  • Saturday afternoon also at 6:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, in addition to the indicated celebrations, there will be mass at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
The outside of the Cathedral is now looking amazing. Time for the inside to join it.

The Parish of the Corticela

Maintains its usual mass at 11:00 h.

Other festivities

The main solemnities and festivities, will be celebrated in the church of S. Martín Pinario (Festivity of the Apostle Santiago, Misa Crismal, S. Juan de Ávila …).

Pórtico de la Gloria

The Pórtico de la Gloria can be visited booking in advance. The access would be through the museum entrance (Pazo de Xelmírez Door).

We hope this information is useful and if you have any further queries about the closures in the Cathedral, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our destination specialists who will be more than happy to help.
