Highlights

  • Hiking around Corsica, a Mediterranean island of stunning contrasts.
  • Strolling through Corte, the historic capital surrounded by mountain peaks.

  • Dining on delicious local swordfish “al fresco” at the marina in Calvi.
  • Admiring the turquoise seas as you walk to the Revellata Lighthouse.

Corsica is a Mediterranean island of exceptional contrasts; sparkling turquoise seas, pretty coastal towns, wild and untamed mountain scenery, dense pine forests, awe-inspiring and majestic valleys.

Even though Corsica has been part of France for over two hundred years, it has its own unique qualities, cuisine, language, culture and history, which only serves to make it more appealing.

Immersion in the incredible mountain scenery near Corte in the centre of the island is then juxtaposed with the stunning coastline in the north of the island around Calvi.

Day 1: Arrive Corte and overnight

Corte is a set against a backdrop of incredible mountain scenery and the historic capital of Corsica.

Overnight: Hotel Duc de Padoue***, Corte

This small and friendly hotel offers brightly decorated rooms and overlooks a quiet square. It is a peaceful haven in the heart of the town centre.

Day 2: Tavignano Gorge

After breakfast, make your way to the citadel of Corte for the start of a stunning day's walk along the Tavignano Gorge. En route to the trail head you may wish to visit the Museum of Corsica, a regional museum of anthropology.

Upon reaching a bridge over the Tavignano, you may wish to swim in the beautiful clear waters. Return to Corte via the same route, with magnificent views down the valley.

Day 3: Gorge de la Restonica

Start your walk at the Grotelle shepherd’s hut. A consistent ascent along the Gorge de la Restonica brings you up to beautiful Lake Melo. This is one of Corsica's classic walks and it is easy to see why as you are constantly immersed in spectacular views of jagged peaks.

An alternate, longer walk is also available (10km)

Once settled into your hotel, enjoy a lovely short walk into the interior amongst the Corsican scrub (or maquis). Ascend on a small path until you reach the chapel of the Notre Dame de la Serra. Revel in the superb views back towards the Gulf of Calvi, the citadel and the Revellata Lighthouse.

Day 5: La Revellata Lighthouse

Begin your walk by following the coast road out of the town centre. The trail takes you out to the peninsula and you’ll pass secluded little beaches, perfect for a cooling dip.

The Revellata Lighthouse is constantly on view and when you reach it, you can stand at the viewpoint and admire views over the Mediterranean and surrounding mountains. Return to Calvi along a path on the top of the peninsular.

Spend your final evening strolling through beautiful Calvi, perhaps finding a fabulous seafood restaurant on the marina in which to enjoy your last delicious meal in Corsica.

Availability

This trip is available to start on any day of the week between the beginning of April and the end of October. (except July and August)

Time of Year

This tour in Corsica can be enjoyed in April, May & June, plus in September & October. July and August is too hot, but the spring is delightful with all the wildflowers in bloom and less people on the trails. September and October are also a great time to be there as it is a quieter than in the height of the summer and the daytime temperatures much more suitable for walking.

Grade & Terrain

This walking tour is graded easy to moderate. However this grade is only applied to the easier walks on offer (where options are given). For example on Day 3 (Restonica Gorge) the walk is more moderate to challenging and on Day 6 (Capu di a Veta) is also a moderate to challenging walk. This is not due to distances, but more importantly, the terrain, which can be very rocky and at time challenging to negotiate. If you choose to walk the easy to moderate walks you will need to have a good level of fitness. If you choose the more challenging options, not only will you need an excellent level of fitness, but you will also need to be sure-footed, have a great sense of balance and not be scared of heights. Also for the harder walks hiking poles are recommended.

Navigation, Route Notes & Maps

You will be provided with route notes and IGN 1; 25,000 maps to enable you to find your way. Some of the trails are way-marked, but others are not, so you will need to have good navigation skills and have the ability to read a map, especially when walking in the mountain areas. The weather can also be somewhat unpredictable in Corsica and so before setting out on walks it always make sense to check the forecast.

Please note that you will be required to carry your own luggage on the train ride between Corte and Calvi so it is a good idea to pack light.

Getting to Corte

The best airport to fly into is Bastia. This airport is served by Easyjet and Flybe from the UK (only in high season) and many other airlines for travellers outside of the UK. From Bastia you can either take the airport shuttle bus to the Bastia train station, or you can take a taxi. It takes about 30 minutes, depending on the traffic. Or we can arrange a taxi transfer for you which needs to be booked in advance. Please speak with your Destination & Adventure Specialist.

From Bastia you can take a train to Corte, which is a very pleasant and scenic journey of about 2 hours. For more information concerning schedules you can visit either the Chemins de Fer de la Corse website or the following unofficial website Corsica Bus which also lists timetables for all public transportation in Corsica.

In the off-season when flights are rarer it is also possible to take a low-cost flight to Nice and then take a ferry to Bastia/Calvi. You will find more information on the Corsica Ferries website.<\p>

Upon arrival in Corte a transfer to your hotel is included.

Getting from Calvi

Flying out of Bastia Airport is your best option. Take the train from Calvi direct to Bastia, which takes approximately 3.5 hours.  On arrival in Bastia you can either take the airport shuttle bus or a taxi to the airport.
