Take a short break on Europe’s number one cycling route; The Lake Constance Cycle Path. Travel through Switzerland and Germany, pedalling from the town of Constance to Europe’s largest waterfalls, the mighty Rhine Falls.
Cycling the lower lake, journey through Rhine fishing villages to the medieval Swiss town of Stein am Rhein and to the spa town of Gailingen. Pedal to Schaffhausen and hop aboard a Rhine River Boat for a trip upstream to the Rhine Falls. Return to Constance by way of Radolfzell and via the monastic island of Reichenau with it’s 8th century Benedictine Abbey to complete a perfectly packed trio of Lake Constance cycling days!
Day 1: Arrive Constance
Your cycling trip will begin in Constance, the largest town on Lake Constance and the town which gave the lake its name. It is a thriving university town and the unofficial capital of the region. You can spend the afternoon exploring the maze of little alleyways and squares or relax at its Mediterranean style harbour.
Day 2: Ride to Gailingen
Cycling from the town of Constance cycle through Rhine River fishing villages and over the Swiss border to the medieval town of Stein am Rhein worthy of a couple hours of exploration. From here, it’s back over the border to the German town of Gailingen, renowned for it’s clean air.

Day 3: Loop Ride to Rhine Fall
Riding west along the Rhine continue towards the Schaffhausen where you can take a boat trip to the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfalls in Europe, bridging Germany and Switzerland. After a likely soaking, heading back up the river to retrace your tracks to the delightful town of Gailingen.

Day 4: Cycle to Constance
The route today sweeps around the Hori Peninsula via the third largest town on the shores of Lake Constance, Radolfzell. On the return to Lake Constance there is also the opportunity to take a trip over to the Monastic Island of Reichenau, home to beautifully preserved Benedictine Monastery (c724).

Day 5: Onward Travel
Depending on your onward travel arrangements, you may have time to soak up the relaxed lakeside atmosphere of Constance or visit the Rosengarten Museum.
The accommodation on this cycling trip consists of small charming, often family-run 3 star hotels. Many are renowned for their excellent cuisine and all offer a warm welcome to cyclists, traditional hospitality and an authentic experience. The differing distances each day reflect the fact that the accommodations are located in different areas within a certain region/town area each night. We work with a number of accommodations along the cycle path, so all distances are an approximation of the recommended routes.
Single Rooms & Solo Cyclists
Single rooms are available subject to a supplementary payment. This trip is also available to solo cyclists and is perfect as the route is popular so there are plenty of people to chat with every day.
Apartment Hotel - Constance
Apartment Hotel dates back over a century and was constructed on the style of Karlsruhe Castle. With a contemporary interior, this historic building meets the needs of the modern day traveller.
Hotel Rheingold - Gallingen
The Rheingold is locally well-known for producing seasonal dishes with an international flavour. An intimate hotel, you hosts take great pride in looking after their guests.

This cycle tour is graded easy to moderate. The daily distances are between 30 to 50km. The route is well signposted and near-traffic free and predominately follows the flat shoreline of the lake through farming regions, towns and villages. Please be mindful of other road users on the approach to towns.
On day 3 when cycling through Horli the terrain will be more undulating in comparison to other days, containing some short, hilly sections. You don’t have to be an experienced cyclist but leading an active lifestyle which includes cycling will help you enjoy the trip.
Navigation, Route Notes & Maps
The route is well signposted and your info pack along with maps will be suffice for directions to your each destination. There will be the occasional other cyclist around in case you are looking for help and you are never that far from a village or town. A detailed information pack including route notes, local information and maps will be included in the trip.
Daily door to door baggage transfer is included in the price of your trip. We ask you to keep your baggage to a maximum of 1 bag per person (maximum weight 20kg).
You can rent comfortable unisex bikes with deep step-through frames, optionally a 24-speed bike with rim brakes or a 7-speed bike with hub gears and back-pedal brakes. You can bring your own saddle if
come equipped with panniers, bike computer, bicycle lock and puncture repair kit.
A handlebar bag with map compartment is
available, please advise at the time of booking if you require this.
If you would prefer to take your own bike, do let us know at the time of booking.
All bike tours are unescorted. The distances are approximations of the recommended routes. Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat, sunscreen and proper sport shoes. Travel to and from Constance is not included in the tour price and must be arranged on your own. In Austria it is mandatory for children under 12 yrs to wear a helmet when on a bike.
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Bike that you have suitable Travel Insurance which covers you for the activity, emergency evacuation and hospital care.
Getting to/from Constance
Your cycling trip will begin in Constance, the largest town on Lake Constance and the town which gave the lake its name. It is a thriving university town and the unofficial capital of the region.
Zurich Airport is well served by most scheduled and low-cost airlines. From the airport train station it is possible to take a direct service to the town of Constance (see www.bahn.co.uk). Alternatively, you can fly into Friedrichshafen and take a 40 mins ferry across the lake.
Including the direct train service from Zurich Airport, Constance is well connected to other major cities in Europe. Some services may require a change of train so we recommend using the Deutsche Bahn train service to plan your journey.
Take the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais (approx. 35 minutes) and then drive to Zurich (approx. 8 hours).

How fit do I need to be?
This cycling tour is graded easy to moderate. The first stage in the areas around Hörli is moderately hilly, otherwise the route is mainly even and along tarred cycle paths. Daily distances are between 20 km and 55 km.
How far in advance do I need to book?
We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this trip is extremely popular especially during peak season from July to August.
When is the best time of year to go?
Spring at Lake Constance is from around May to June. Flowers quickly blossom and timbered houses over spill with colourful flower boxes. July and August is the best of the weather but can be busy. September is just in time for end of the wine season and can also have superb weather without the crowds.
What personal equipment do I need?
You will need comfortable sports shoes, comfortable clothes for cycling, waterproof jacket and trousers, a helmet and a sunhat. We supply a detailed packing list with your information pack.
