Macs Adventure has been running self guided walking holidays in Spain since 2008.  As soon as we walked the Camino, we knew that Spain had so much to offer and we started to look for other areas to set up our style of holidays. 

From humble beginnings, we now send over 2500 travellers every year to Spain, each of them finding their own adventure. We provide the freedom to choose your route, itinerary and travel companions and to discover Spain at your own pace. 

We knew from experience how important it was to have amazing partners on the ground in Spain to deal with any issues that you might come across.  We are proud to say that our Spanish team, suppliers and baggage handlers are outstanding and should you have the slightest issue, they will fall over themselves to help you out.

We carry your bags to lighten your load so you can concentrate on simply  enjoying the unique culture, food and scenery of the less-travelled parts of Spain. We want to showcase our expertise, by giving you all the resources you will ever need.  In the planning stage, we have free guides, comprehensive videos and a host of staff with their own Spanish experience, waiting to answer your questions. On the route, we use high-quality digital mapping as well as the best maps and guidebooks to make sure you find your way.  

We love Spain and our main aim is to make sure that you do too.  

Temperatures in Spain typically don't dip too low, even in winter when the lows typically stay in the 40- to 50-degrees Fahrenheit range country-wide. Summers, on the other hand, can get really hot, with highs creeping into the low to mid-90s in some places. For this reason, we recommend visiting during the shoulder seasons in late spring/early summer (May or early June) or late summer (August to September, even October) to avoid the extreme heat. 

If the hot summer months of July and August are the only time you can travel, consider visiting the north of Spain where temps don't soar quite as high (highs reaching upper 70s in the summer), such as Bilbao which is the starting point of the Camino del Norte.

Spring in Spain

If you are looking for warmth with fewer crowds this is a great time to visit. Spring and early summer are also one of the best seasons for festivals. From Easter’s Semana Santa to local Flamenco fairs and the astonishing human towers of Catalonia. This is a great time to visit the Canary Islands which can often be to too hot to enjoy in summer.

Summer in Spain 

If you are tied down to travelling during the summer months we would recommend visiting the North of Spain which is typically cooler. A great option is the Picos de Europa one of the most impressive mountain ranges in Spain and a superb environment for walking. Due to the elevation gains, altitude, and close proximity to the sea this area is great for the summer months.  

Tip: If travelling during school holidays a single-centered trip is perfect for families. It offers the flexibility to make the trip as active or as relaxing as you please. One of our most popular is the Las Alpajurras Escape.

Autumn in Spain

September temperatures are wonderful, especially for walking and biking. It can still be pretty hot in the big cities of Madrid and Seville, however, Catalonia and the north start to soften. September has become a very popular time to travel for this reason its now a perfect alternative to Spring. In October, temperatures begin to dip across the country, however, Andalucia can still be in the 20s at this time of year.  

Tip: Do bring a good waterproof jacket if traveling during October as downpours can happen at any time.

Beaches - there are plenty of places in Spain with beautiful and uncrowded beaches which are perfect for dipping weary feet in and our tours pass many of them! For a hidden Catalonian gem, there is the picturesque Sa Tuna cove near Begur surrounded by pine trees. In Menorca, Cap de Cavallería with its photogenic lighthouse sits perched high above the ocean. And whilst most people think of whitewashed villages in beating hot sun for Andalucia, the coastline is quite spectacular.

Food and Drink - if there is one thing Spain does well, it's food! Some favourite Spanish specialities of the Macs team include the delicious Jamón Iberico, mouthwatering pork found in the Aracena region, Esqueixada, a tasty salad dish made with salt cod popular in Catalonia, Pulpo a Feira, boiled octopus sprinkled with paprika, a speciality in Galicia, and of course you can't beat nibbling on some small Tapas dishes like Gambas al ajillo (fresh shrimp with garlic and cayenne pepper) and Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce)! To whet your appetite, why not try a delicious glass of local wine in Galicia, Albariño. Or if sherry is your thing, hop from one bodega to another, sampling their wares in the sherry capital of Jerez de Frontera.

Towns and Villages - away from the amazing coastline and beaches and some of the more well known cities and towns, Spain has plenty of more undiscovered towns and villages well worth exploring. Sotres, one of the highest villages in the Picos de Europa in northern Spain is a charming agricultural village where they famously mature Queso de Cabrales cheese in the limestone caves which are abundant in the local area. Another mountain village, Capileira, is well worth a visit, set high above the Poqueira Gorge and with an abundance of local handicraft shops lining its twisty, narrow streets. And near the coast, but perhaps not in a part of Mallorca so well known are the gorgeous honey-coloured Tramuntana villages of Soller, Deia and Valldemossa.
