A short walking break based in the volcanic centre of Tenerife, Mount Teide National Park.

Stay for four nights in the colonial style Parador de las Canadas hotel in its fantastic location at the foot of Mount Teide, and enjoy a choice of walks ranging from a short walk to the iconic Catedral rock formation to a challenging summit of Mount Teide.

At the end of the day sit back and relax on the terrace enjoying views of Mount Teide, enjoy a dip in the swimming pool, feast on fine Canarian Cuisine and enjoy the absolute tranquillity and clear night skies.

Day 1: Arrive Parador Las Cañadas del Teide

Arriving at either Tenerife South or Tenerife North Airport, you will be transferred to the fantastic Parador Las Cañadas del Teide at the foot of Mount Teide (1h or 1h 15min respectively). Evenings spent here are quite an experience, with the clear and clean night skies providing wonderful star-gazing opportunities and the restaurant serving Canarian specialities such as Canarian Puchero, a tasty stew.

If you will be coming from elsewhere in Tenerife, please speak to us about arranging a transfer for a small additional cost.

Overnight: Parador Las Cañadas del Teide

Day 2: Choice of Walks from The Parador

You have a choice of walks for your time spent at the Parador.  One of your options is the great hulk of a mountain behind the Parador, Mount Guajara. Rising to 2715 metres, this walk should not be underestimated but is within most keen walker’s abilities as you start from 2200m at the Parador and an evening there will have given you the chance to acclimatise to the high altitude. Reaching the plateau on the top, enjoy views over Mount Teide, the caldera and cloud-cover permitting, the neighbouring islands of  Gran Canaria and La Gomera.

Walk: 13km, 670m Ascent/Descent,  5-6 Hours

Overnight: Parador Las Cañadas del Teide

Day 3: Choice of Walks from The Parador

You may choose to take it easier today with a nice short 4km walk to Roques Garcia rock formations. These natural monuments take various bizarre shapes including the spectacular pointy rock known as “La Catedral” with its tower like shape reminiscent of a Cathedral, and the precariously balanced Roque Chincado. You can also expect to see some of the exotic plantlife growing in the national park including flixweed and summit roses.

Walk: 4km, 200m Ascent/Descent, 2 hours

Overnight: Parador Las Cañadas del Teide

Day 4: Choice of Walks from The Parador

Your final remaining option is the great Mount Teide itself. You can do this by taking the cable car to cover 2000m of the ascent up to the ascent at 3718m with just a short one hour walk to the summit from the cable car station. Or the other option is a longer loop walk, taking the cable car up to the summit before walking back down via the Altavista Refuge. Both of these options do require booking cable car tickets and a permit for the summit of Mount Teide in advance and we include details of this in your information pack.

Loop walk to summit: 10km, 160m Ascent/1350m Descent, 7 Hours

Walk from upper cable car station to summit: 1.5km, 150m Ascent/Descent, 1 Hour

Overnight: Parador Las Cañadas del Teide

Day 5: Onward Travel

Check out after breakfast and make your way back to the airport or elsewhere in Tenerife if your holiday is continuing.

Parador de las Canadas - Mount Teide National Park

An overnight stay at the amazing Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide is an experience you will never forget. With panoramic views of Mount Teide, its location cannot be bettered, and on top of that you can enjoy their swimming pool and terrace as well as a fantastic restaurant.

Availability

You can start this tour on any day of the week subject to availability between September and June. We do not offer this tour between the 7th May and 6th June and then again between 15th October and 12th November due to the fact that mouflon hunting takes place during these periods in the national park and access to a couple of the walks is restricted at that time.

Please note that this tour is only available for departures from March 2019.

Time of Year

Tenerife experiences a year-round dry, and sunny climate. We do not offer this tour in the summer months as it would be too hot for comfortable and safe walking then. You can expect average temperatures of between 16 and 25 degrees between September and March, with it beginning to heat up a bit in the springtime. There can be some rainfall in the winter months of November to February but the showers do not usually last long.

Being at a high altitude of 3718m, there can be snow on Teide any time between October and May so you should always be prepared with warmer clothes if you do plan to summit Teide.

Mount Teide

If you would like to visit Mount Teide you will need to book cable car tickets and/or a permit to ascend to the summit in advance. Details of this will be included in your information pack.

Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

This trip is not available to solo walkers due to the remote nature of some of the walks. Single rooms are available and a single supplement is payable.

Grade & Terrain

This walking tour is graded easy to moderate overall as all of the walks are optional. Walks are between 1-7 hours on a mixture of rural tracks, footpaths and animal trails. Some of the terrain is quite rocky and you may encounter some loose rocks or muddy/slippery sections in wet weather.  The higher areas may even have a dusting of snow during early spring or winter so warm clothing should always be taken with you. Ascents are between 150 and 1350m (1350m if you choose the longer walk up to the summit of Teide).

Navigation, Route Notes & Maps

The routes on this trip are generally well way-marked but we will also provide detailed route notes and maps. You will also have access to the Macs Adventure Smartphone App enabling you to follow the route using your phone’s GPS so using this combined with the provided route notes and maps means you should have no problems finding your way.

Travel Insurance

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.
