Highlights

  • Feast your senses on the colours, sights and sounds of Marrakech
  • Relax with a mint tea on the rooftop terrace of your boutique riad
  • Wander through the medina's souks, a riot of spices, rugs and bright lanterns
  • Enjoy traditional Berber hospitality at the stylish Kasbah du Toubkal
  • Walk along centuries-old paths through the Atlas mountains led by a private guide

Combine the heady sights and sounds of bustling Marrakech with the peace and tranquillity of the stunning Atlas Mountains on a 4 night short break, staying in a boutique riad in Marrakech and the Kasbah du Toubkal, a stylish mountain hotel with some of the best rooftop views in North Africa.

Starting in Marrakech, you have two days at leisure to explore this extraordinary city. Wander the bustling souks of the medina and soak up the atmosphere of Djemaa el-Fna square with its snake charmers, musicians and medicine men.

A private transfer will take you to the mountains, where you meet your personal mountain guide. Over the next two days enjoy a choice of walks ranging from a short stroll around the surrounding Berber villages to longer walks taking in views across majestic peaks, before heading back to Marrakech for your flight home.

Day 1: Arrive Marrakech

Arrive at Marrakech Airport and be transferred straight to your elegant riad in the heart of the ancient medina. After checking in and enjoying a refreshing glass of mint tea, head out to explore the exciting Djemaa el Fna square where storytellers, acrobats, snake charmers and musicians all vie for your attention!

Marrakech is easily accessed by numerous airlines with direct flights from the UK and across Europe. Coming from further afield, you will mostly likely fly via one of the large European gateways like Madrid or Lisbon or via Casablanca.

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 2: Free day in Marrakech

With more time today, we highly recommend a wander around the bustling souks of the medina where you can enjoy some friendly bartering with the tradesmen selling everything from jewellery, to exotic spices, to exquisitely woven carpets.

For a contrast to this bombardment of the senses, head to the colonial Ville Nouvelle quarter which is home to pavement cafes and tranquil gardens as well as the 12-acre botanical garden, Majorelle Gardens, owned by the late Yves Saint Laurent. In the evening take your pick from one of the many restaurants lining the square emitting some of the most amazing smells or perhaps even try some of the street food on offer if you are feeling brave!

Overnight: Marrakech

Day 3: Transfer to Kasbah du Toubkal, short walk around the Imlil Valley

A private transfer will transport you from the city this morning and drop you at the Kasbah du Toubkal (approx 1h30m), in the heart of the Atlas Mountains. Perched on a rocky outcrop at 1800m with the most amazing views of the surrounding mountains, the stylish Kasbah du Toubkal offers a true Berber welcome. Be greeted with rose water to cleanse your hands, and an aromatic mint tea before meeting your personal mountain guide. If you feel like it you may choose to do a short walk this afternoon to one of the earthen red villages of the Imlil valley and enjoy tea with a Berber family. Alternatively you may simply choose to relax on the amazing roof terrace, lounging on comfortable pillows taking in the views.

Optional Walk: Up to 4hrs (depending on arrival time)

Dinner & Overnight: Kasbah du Toubkal

Day 4: Choice of walks in the Imlil Valley

With the help of your guide, choose from a selection of walks today. You may wish to choose separate morning and afternoon walks, allowing you to enjoy an al fresco lunch at the Kasbah. Or alternatively take a picnic lunch and venture further afield.

Shorter options include a 4hr walk to the Tizi n’Tamatert pass (2279m) with amazing views down the valley. Or full day options include a walk to the Azzaden Valley (6-7hrs), west of the Kasbah, stopping for a picnic lunch en route and returning via the small Berber village of Malat.

In the evening enjoy a delicious Moroccan meal prepared from typical local ingredients or perhaps enjoy the traditional hammam (steam bath).

Walk: Up to 7hrs

Dinner & Overnight: Kasbah du Toubkal

Day 5: Onward Travel

After enjoying a final breakfast on the wonderful rooftop terrace, return by private transfer to Marrakech Airport for your onward travel.

Kasbah du Toubkal - Imlil, High Atlas Mountains

The Kasbah du Toubkal (a founding member of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World) sits on a rocky outcrop nestled deep in the heart of the High Atlas mountains. Staffed entirely by local villagers and with no road access, the Kasbah is reached by a 15 minute mule ride from the village in Imlil, giving you a true taste of Berber hospitality, and more than a typical hotel service. Time of Year

Morocco has a huge number of sunny days and even in winter, warm sunny days are quite common, especially in Marrakech. However, The Kasbah sits at 1800m and therefore just below the snow line in the Atlas Mountains. Snow can and will fall on a few days in the winter months between January and February. During the spring months there will be lots of wildflowers in the mountains. In the summer the mountains offer a cool retreat from the very hot temperatures of Marrakech which can reach up to 40 degrees at that time of year. In the winter, average temperatures hover around 10-20 degrees in the mountains with the nights being cooler.

Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable. Unfortunately this holiday is not available for solo walkers.

Grade & Terrain

The walking is graded easy-moderate as it is your choice as to how strenuous you would like the walks to be and there are some fairly easy options. If you do choose the longer option to the Azzaden Valley, this would be graded more as a moderate walk. In the mountains the routes follow centuries-old Berber tracks, which can be high, steep, narrow, uneven and rough underfoot. Due to the lack of marked paths you will be supported by a local fully qualified mountain guide. Each day at The Kasbah you can discuss the possible walks available with your guide, and therefore adapt your plans accordingly. The tracks are often a considerable distance from any road or track which is accessible by vehicle—this is a very remote area. You should be a regular walker and have a good level of walking fitness to get the most from this tour.
