Across the Swiss Alps: Klosters to Tirano

This tour is perfect for both first-time and experienced hikers, who like their creature comforts. This Moderate graded trip explores one of Switzerland’s most beautiful valleys. The hikes can all be completed with a basic level of fitness, and, if necessary, the hiking days can be shortened or skipped with ease as the Rhaetian Railway is never far from the trail. Stay in friendly, comfortable 3* hotels and one mountain hut, all of which extend a warm welcome to hikers.

We have graded this tour as Moderate. It's a fantastic option for those wishing to try their first Alpine Crossing. With ample opportunity to take the train when necessary, it is one of our easiest Alpine crossing toursi. The hikes are approx. 11-16km/7-10mi, depending on which variant you choose.

The trails are well waymarked, and the path fluctuates from wider well maintained paths to narrow alpine trails. There are ascents of approx. 700m/2,297ft and descents up to 1100m/3,609ft. Sections of the trail cross steep slopes, which you will have to traverse across, so surefootedness and a head for heights is required there.

Stay 6 nights in comfortable 3* hotels in private en-suite rooms and 1 night in a mountain hotel, in a private room. An example of the accommodation we use in some of the towns along the way can be found on the itinerary. If these accommodations are not available, a hotel of the same or better standard will be used. Please be aware that twin & double rooms in Switzerland are typically 2 single mattresses side by side in one double bed frame with two separate duvet covers and pillows.

Meals

Breakfasts are included each day, and usually consist of a large spread of local produce and filling breakfast options to prepare you for your days hike. Lunch and dinners are not included with exception of your night in Davos where dinner is included. Most of your accommodations will more than happy to provide a packed lunch on request and this can be booked on arrival.

This trip is available to solo travelers and a supplement is payable as some of the costs are not shared. Single rooms are on request and a supplement is payable.

Extra Night(s)

If you have some extra time, we recommend adding a few additional days along your route. Consider spending extra nights in the following location:

Pontresina - This area is the heart of the Upper Engadine hiking region, providing access to the Val Roseg, stunning glacier views, and the Morteratsch glacier trail. You can also take a day off from hiking to visit St. Moritz, making it an ideal spot for either a restful break or a more intensive hiking day rather than just passing through.

You will be hiking on a well-signposted trail where you'll discover a fascinating, culturally-influenced mountain world. Navigation is straightforward as you can use the Macs Adventure app which has maps, GPS tracks, and daily route info. Simply download the GPS tracks for offline use and follow the route on your phone with the assurance that navigation will be simple, and you can’t get lost.

Our hikes usually begin and end at a central point in town (such as a church, bus stop, etc.). Access routes to your accommodation are not included in our km/mile daily figures. However, the Macs app will guide you to your accommodation. You just need to go to the ‘Itinerary’ on the applicable day, open the section about your accommodation, and click on the ‘Get Directions’ button.

This trip is available to start daily, from the end of June to September. The best months for hiking are in the summer months between June and mid-September when the wildflowers are in bloom and the weather is generally mild. On the weekends there may be reduced trains and buses in operation.

The Alps have generally warm and sunny summers and cold and snowy winters. However, weather in the Alps can change very quickly, particularly at altitude. You should be prepared for all weather eventualities as even snow can fall in the summer in the mountains and regardless of the time of year and snow can be found on the higher passes. 

We recommend checking the local weather forecast daily before starting your hike. Most of the time, your hosts are well informed about the current weather situation and are happy to help.

By Plane: You can fly into Bern (BNO) 3hrs away, Zurich (ZRH) 2hrs, Basel (BSL) 3.5hrs, or Geneva (GVA) 5hrs. From each of these airports, you can travel to Klosters (2hrs) via train.

By Train: The best way to reach Klosters is by train; it is just 45 mins from Landquart. Train timetables and details of public transportation in Switzerland are available via the excellent travel planner at www.sbb.ch

Leaving Tirano, the closest airport is Milan (MXP) 2.5hrs. Train timetables and details of Italian public transport in Italy are available via the travel planner at www.trenitalia.com/en 

Alternatively we can arrange a return trip from Tirano with the Bernina Express to Switzerland for your onward travel or where you can return to Zurich (6hrs) on a stunning train journey crossing the Alps.

Your luggage will be transferred between your accommodation as per your itinerary. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg/44lbs per person.
