Iceland's Laugavegur Trail (Self Guided)

7 Days & 6 Nights 4.7 Read 10 reviews
  • Hike Iceland’s most famous hut-to-hut trail at your own pace
  • Active volcanoes, steaming natural pools, mountains and glaciers
  • Meet fellow trekkers over dinner in the cosy mountain huts
  • Hang out with a beer in the vibrant capital, Reykjavik
  • Find your inner Viking in the land of fire and ice
Iceland’s Laugavegur trail is one of the world’s classic treks, traversing the volcanic highlands of southern Iceland. The 53km route begins at Landmannalaugar, a geothermal zone of bubbling natural hot springs, and then passes through a dramatic landscape of rhyolite peaks, yellow mountain ridges, lava fields, mud pools and waterfalls before descending into the wooded valleys of Thorsmork, the forest of Thor. Staying overnight at characterful mountain huts in dramatic locations, you will be able to share stories from the trail with fellow trekkers over dinner each night. Wonder at the theatrical Eyjafjallajokull, the active volcano that caused havoc in 2010, and enjoy the trek that National Geographic included as one of the “20 Best Hikes in the World”!
If you love wild open spaces and are eager to see nature at its most raw and powerful, you’ll want to tick this challenging but unique trail off your list! Travelling self-guided, you will follow the well-marked trail with the aid of a map, our comprehensive route notes and GPS routes in the Macs Adventure smartphone app. Your luggage will be transported from hut to hut, and you will be provided with a meal package to allow you to prepare your own meals at the mountain huts. Enjoy the camaraderie of staying in mountain huts with luggage transfers each day. This week-long tour is a fulfilling and unique arctic experience.

Activity Level & Terrain

This trip is graded moderate to strenuous and daily walks are between 4-7 hours in length and up to 15 km (9.5 mi) in distance each day. The terrain is varied and some sections are uneven with stones that can be tough underfoot. There may be some wet or icy stretches, especially at the start of the season. There are some steep hills and the maximum ascent is 600 m (1900 ft). The name "Laugavegur" means 'the way of the water' which may explain why the trail includes river crossings each day (except on day 1). Information on how to cross rivers and streams in the safest way possible will be provided in your information pack. This tour is suitable for experienced walkers looking for a challenge.

The Laugavegur Trail is well waymarked and the route is easy to follow. You will receive a comprehensive information pack, kit list, map and you will have access to the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to make sure you have no worries finding your way!

Your trip includes 2 nights in guesthouse accommodation in Reykjavik with shared facilities (one night before and one night after your walking tour), 4 nights in simple mountain huts.

All huts are heated, some have electricity, and some have hot water. Mountain huts in Iceland are very different to Alpine huts, which many people are more familiar with. Eating and sleeping are often done in the same room, with bunks around the edge of the room and a big table in the middle. Showers are available (at additional cost—payable locally in cash only) at the huts at Alftavatn, Emstrur and Thorsmork. Bunk rooms are mixed-sex and have single and twin beds; participants should be prepared to share with other travellers. Sleeping bags may be rented at additional cost (please contact us to pre-arrange). As the huts are heated, a standard sleeping bag is sufficient. Please note that due to the busy summer period, it may be necessary to provide you with alternative accommodation in Reykjavik to that listed.

Solo Walkers

This trip is not available to solo walkers. If you are travelling solo and wish to do this trip, please see our guided version.

Your accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis whilst in Reykjavik.  During your time on the trail, as there are few possibilities to buy food and the huts don’t have kitchen staff, you are responsible for cooking your own meals. To make this easier for you, we include a pre-prepared meal pack of specially prepared dishes that can be heated easily. The menu includes items such as pasta carbonara, Icelandic meat soup, noodles with chicken plus a dessert for evening meals. For breakfast, there is muesli, instant porridge, instant coffee, tea and hot chocolate, crispbread, butter and jam. For your lunchbox, there is bread, flatbread, cheese, ham, salami, pate, “skyr” (Icelandic yoghurt), instant cup soups, biscuits and energy bars. You will need to bring your own lunch box, water bottle and thermos for your lunch. The tap water in the huts is very pure and does not need to be filtered. There are also numerous streams and rivers on the way where bottles can be refilled. Cooking equipment is provided at each hut and food is transported between huts together with main luggage.

When To Go

The Laugavegur Trail can be booked during Iceland's summer months, from June to September. This trip has set departures and is bookable every Friday from mid-June to the end of August meaning that your trip would start on a Thursday with a pre-trek overnight in Reykjavik before embarking on the Laugavegur Trail the next day. Please be aware that the departure of the bus on Day 2 of your itinerary may be altered due to scheduled changes by the bus company, if this is the case we will be in touch with you as soon as we can to confirm the correct time.

Iceland has a temperate climate, and its high latitude keeps summers rather chilly. As goes for any mountainous area, it is imperative to be prepared for all conditions. You will receive a detailed information pack including a kit list to ensure you know what to expect on the trail.

Getting to the Start

Fly into Keflavik International Airport, which is served by numerous airlines from the UK, European and international destinations. Iceland is a 3-hour flight from the UK and typically only 5 to 6 hours from North America. Icelandair offers many direct flights from various US airports such as New York, Washington, Chicago, Portland, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

From Keflavik Airport there are regular and reliable transfer services into Reykjavik itself (and vice-versa). Reykjavik Excursions/FlyBus and Airport Express/Iceland Excursions offer transfer services, Keflavik is approx. 90 mins (standard transfer) from Reykjavik.

Getting from the End

Your tour finishes in Reykjavik. From here, take a bus to Keflavik airport for your return flight. Check Reykjavik Excursions for more details about the Flybus Airport Transfer services.

Luggage Transfer

Enjoy the ease of having your bags transferred between mountain huts as per your itinerary. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 18kg per person. Please bring a soft (duffel) bag instead of a hard suitcase to allow for easy transportation.

Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, lightweight clothes, waterproofs and a day pack, as well as other equipment such as walking poles for river crossings, a power bank, a sleeping bag for your overnights in the mountain huts and other gear that will make your adventure both safer and more comfortable. Sleeping bags can also be hired, please let us know at the time of booking if you are interested in this added option.
