Itinerary
Day 1 Overnight in FlorenceFlorence has its own airport, Firenze-Peretola (FLR), but the range of flights arriving here is quite limited (there are some flights from London and other European cities). There’s also Pisa Airport nearby which is a main hub with lots of flight choices or you could keep it simple and book return flights in/out of Rome.
We recommend arriving on an early flight to maximise your time to explore the city, as there is a lot to see and do here. Or maybe you’d just like more time in Florence to soak up that atmosphere. Just let us know and we can add extra nights here.
As for how to get from the airport into the city. It’s a short bus or tram ride from Florence Airport taking about 15 mins. A bus or train from Pisa Airport takes around an hour. Or a train from Rome taking approx. 2 hours 15.
If you’re after a journey that’s more of an experience in itself, then it’s also possible to reach Florence by train from London via other European hubs like Paris, Lyon, and Turin. So maybe take the long way to the start of the tour. You could book yourself accommodation in these amazing cities en route to see even more of Europe’s highlights.
Florence is at the heart of the Italian Renaissance where beauty, art, history, and culture are the essence of everyday life. Wander the old streets where magnificent Baroque and Gothic churches, fortresses, and cathedrals jostle for space. Explore 13th-century basilicas, the jewellery shops lining the Ponte Vecchio Bridge, see the masterpieces in the Uffizi and Academia Galleries, and the Pitti Palace, where the House of Medici shaped Florence into a helm of arts and humanities.
Finish the day with a “passeggiate’ (an evening walk), an Italian social tradition, within the Piazza Della Repubblica for a fantastic people-watching opportunity. For dinner sample Ribollita, the traditional Tuscan bread soup made with a variety of vegetables.

On the first floor of a historic Florentine building, a couple of minutes’ walk from the Santa Maria Novella train station. There are 6 bedrooms inside. Each has been decorated in a comfortable and eco conscious style with recycled and solid wood furniture made by local artisans. Bedrooms have a/c, safe, minibar, Sky TV, a hairdryer, and a kettle. Breakfast is organic and has gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options available. All rooms have a double bed as standard but don’t worry they can also be set up with two separate beds, so do be sure to mention to us at the time of booking if you would like a twin room. The minimum age for children at this B&B is 13.

It's all about location, location, location! This B&B is in the very heart of the city, right by the magnificent Florence Duomo, making it easy for you to get their early and beat the queues. Located in a 19th century building, the rooms are decorated in a traditional Florentine style. They have free WiFi, smart TV, a hair dryer, minibar, kettle, safe and a/c. There is a terrace on the top floor providing great views of the Piazza Duomo. This B&B is suitable for all ages.
You have the whole day in Florence to do as much or as little as you choose. In our app, you’ll find a self-guided loop walk taking you to the city’s main and lesser-known attractions. Such as the jewellery shops that line the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace, Bobli Gardens, and of course the huge exterior of Florence’s Cathedral. There are many churches, museums, gelato shops, and the leather market marked along the route so you may decide to linger longer in some places along the way. The app gives you the confidence to explore the city like a local without a guide or a group encroaching on your precious holiday time. Go where you want to, when you want, with the people you want to.
Ascent/Descent: 114m/114m
If you’d like to see more of Florence, maybe consider adding an extra night or two here. If you do so, then maybe you’d like to travel to Pisa by train to take a photo of you holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which has become a social media rite of passage. There are frequent trains between the cities, and it takes about an hour. Or if you’d like to see more of rural Tuscany, you can book a private day tour of Val D'orcia or Siena and San Gimignano by car.

Take the direct train to La Spezia, the gateway to the Cinque Terre, this morning, taking about 2 hours 30.
The five mesmerising villages of Cinque Terre are one of, if not the most famous coastlines in Europe. With its gravity-defying villages clinging to the rock face above the crashing waves. The scenery along the cliff-top coastal paths between the villages is dramatic and the perfect way of escaping the crowds. The villages themselves are packed with pastel-coloured buildings with tucked-away gelato shops, and locally owned restaurants.
We’ve included a Cinque Terre Rail & Trails Card giving you the freedom to jump on and off the trains as you choose and walk between the pastel-coloured, cliff-hugging villages that line this celebrated coastline. The trains run frequently, and the villages are only a short distance apart so exploring this way couldn’t be simpler.
The great thing about the rail card is you can pick what walks you do. If you don’t feel like walking, then hop on the train and see whichever village appeals to you. Whether that will be just one, where you go paddling in the sea, or tick off all five in one hit.
This afternoon walk down Lover’s Lane (Via dell' Amore) between Manarola to Corniglia. This is a nice starter walk as it’s not particularly long, the ascent/descent is less than 400m, and the views are phenomenal.
The footpath seems reluctant to leave the Manarola and keeps giving you glimpses of those colourful houses stacked up the mountain.
The other thing the region is famous for is wine. There are some 7,000 kilometres of dry-stone wall here – equal to the length of the Great Wall of China! – to fortify the terraces where the grapes grow. The path leads across these terraces, climbing up and dropping down to different levels like a giant game of snakes and ladders, you’ll begin to appreciate the effort it took to build these terraces. And that’s to understand the most amazing thing about the Cinque Terre - the way locals have sculpted this inhospitable landscape of steep mountains and waves crashing into a rocky coastline - where really no one ought to be living - and turned it into a paradise, where fruit grows, trains go through mountains, houses tower around marinas, and people come from around the world to witness it.
The train journey to Manarola is only 11mins and the return from Corniglia takes 15mins.
Ascent/Descent: 378m/387m

This B&B is a short walk from the railway station and inside the historical Palazzo Calderai, a late 19th-century Liberty style building. All bedrooms have a/c, free WiFi, a coffee machine and kettle, minibar, hairdryer, and safe. The bedrooms are decorated in a modern style.

This B&B is a short walk from the railway station. All bedrooms have free WiFi, satellite Tv, a/c, minibar and safe. The bedrooms are decorated with comfort in mind, but each is different, reflecting the tastes of each of the family members who own the guesthouse. For example, Room C, is designed by Chiara to reflect her love of reading and Room M by Manuel, in a classic style. Luggage storage is available (additional charges apply after 2pm) and a laundry service (at an extra cost). Wine tasting, and beach towels are available on request.

Today hop on a train to Corniglia and start your coastal walk from here.
This is one of the most popular walks in the Cinque Terre and for good reason - it’s beautiful! The narrow path winds along next to the azure waters of the Mediterranean. The best approach for this walk is to take it slowly, stopping in each of the three villages along the way, as they all have their own unique characteristics.
Corniglia is the only village situated on a clifftop rocky spur. Vernazza is the most picture-postcard-perfect of the villages, which is a strong claim considering the standard set by the others. Monterosso is the busiest of the villages, but what better excuse to get lost in the narrow alleys and back streets, or just to sit outside with a gelato watching the world go by? Grab dinner here or have a paddle on the beach before getting the train back to La Spezia.
The train journey to Corniglia takes 15 mins and back from Monterosso takes 23 mins.

Get the train to Monterosso and walk to Levanto. The route traces the coastal trail along the promontory offering sea views every step of the way. You can choose to end your walk here and spend the afternoon relaxing on the golden sandy beach (which is different from the rockier beaches that line most of the coast).
This idyllic village has a skyline pierced by church spires and towers. The pretty Church of Sant' Andrea is well worth a visit. Have dinner here before taking the train back to Le Spezia.
Alternatively, if you’re feeling energised and want to have a longer walk, then this is a loop walk and you can leave Levanto and follow a different path back to Monterosso. The route back reaches the top of the ridge giving sweeping views over Levanto and the mountains surrounding the gulf.
Another option if you fancy a longer walk, but not the climb, is to simply retrace your steps and return to Monterosso on the same coastal path as you used to get there.
Shorter walk to Levanto: 8kms/5mi, Ascent/Descent: 449m/472m (double this if you decide to walk back the same way rather than taking the train back).
Longer loop walk from/to Monterosso via Levanto: 14kms/9mi, Ascent/Descent: 842m/851m
The train takes just 23 mins to Monterosso and 30 mins back from Levanto.

This morning take the direct train to Rome, taking approx. 3 hours 50, making it the longest journey on this trip. Sit back and take in the view, read a good book (a Rome guidebook perhaps), listen to your favourite tunes, and pack a picnic lunch and snacks for your journey.
On arrival, the afternoon is yours to start exploring Rome, the eternal city. It’s a city where history surrounds you, it seems to radiate from every part of this incredible place. But Rome is also a city in the present, that’s full of life, Italian culture, and style. There’s an array of restaurants, bars, and cafes. There are a wealth of museums and of course, world-famous archaeological sites like the Roman Forum, Colosseum, and Patheon. Rome is also one of the few places where you’ll find a city within a city. As it’s home to the Vatican City, with the important pilgrimage site of St Peter’s Basilica at its heart, and of course Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel ceiling inside the Vatican Museums.
Depending on how many of Rome’s attractions you’re hoping to visit you may like to purchase a Rome Tourist Card, which gives you free and/or fast-tracked entry to many of the highlights. There are further details about this and other city cards in the ‘Info & FAQs’ section. For the main attractions in Rome, we would strongly recommend booking in advance of travel to avoid disappointment.

Rome is a large city, but this hotel is ideally situated just a 5 min walk from the main train station and within 10-mins journey on the bus or metro from all the city’s best-known sites. The hotel overlooks the Michelangelo Cloister of the National Roman Museum - Diocletian Baths. Bedrooms are decorated in a contemporary style, and all have a/c, TV, a hairdryer, kettle, and free WiFi access. The hotel has an inner courtyard and relaxation area to escape the bustling city. There is also a bar serving drinks and aperitifs, a free online newspaper service, and a breakfast room.
Take a walk to explore Rome and the Vatican City. It will take you to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Circus Maximus, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and so much more. There are many churches, museums, pizzerias, and historical sites marked along the route that you can visit as you explore. You could easily spend many days in Rome and still not see everything, there are seemingly endless possibilities of things to do and see, so this is an ideal spot to consider adding extra nights.
If you tire of exploring, then grab a supplì, the king of Roman street food. These deep-fried rice croquettes are traditionally filled with Ragu and have been eaten by locals for over 150 years. It’s easy to see why with how moreish they are. It’s also easy to shorten the walk by hopping on the metro.
The walk finishes at the Vatican, so from here, either walk back into the city centre or if your feet could do with a rest then get the metro at Cipro and go back to Termini (near your hotel) or the Colosseum in the city centre. Relax with a cold glass of beer and take in a sport of people-watching. The popularity of craft beers is on the rise in Italy, and they are known as birre artigianali. There is also an array of fantastic restaurants to choose from.

You can take a direct train from Rome Termini to Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) or there are several bus lines too. Either way, the journey takes between 45 mins-1 hour. To reach Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) there are several bus services between Rome termini train station and the airport.

Other Information
Is it for me?Have you ever considered booking a self-guided tour but felt anxious about the amount of walking involved? Want to spend time experiencing a destination rather than just rushing through it? Then one of our Italian Discovery tours is the holiday for you.
We have created several different itineraries to give you the choice of spending more or less time in each place, and we can also add extra nights in for you if you still want more time to soak up the atmosphere.
With our Macs Adventure app, you have all the information you need in the palm of your hand including walking routes to take in the city highlights, restaurant suggestions, and attraction information.
The best part of these tours is that you’re the boss, there’s no group to contend with or guide hurrying you from place to place. You can choose where to linger longer or take a detour for a cappuccino or a cheeky afternoon glass of wine.
All the walks are optional, so with no point-to-point walking included, you can simply pick what you fancy doing and what you don’t.
We have included your rail tickets so all you need to do is turn up at the station with your bag and step on board to travel effortlessly from place to place. And best of all, this avoids the notorious Italian traffic and the dreaded overcrowded bus tours.
We haven’t included any attraction entrances on our Italian Discovery tours, as we know everyone is different and there are so many wonderful things to see in each place, so we wanted to give you the freedom to cherry-pick what’s right for you.
There isn’t a luggage transfer included on this trip, but that’s why we’ve picked accommodation that is only a short stroll from the rail station. We recommend taking a compact roller case with you, so you can easily stow it on the train, and then drop it off at your accommodation before setting off on your discoveries.
After all that exploring you can head back to your comfy air-conditioned bedroom to relax.
This tour is graded as easy to moderate, as the walks are a combination of easy city-based walks and moderate coastal walking. The walks are an average of 9 km/6 mi in length. If this still feels too long for you, then no problem, you can decide to cut a city walk short and head to a pizzeria for a long lunch or skip the walk entirely and just head for whatever attractions appeal to you the most.
The great thing about walking in the Cinque Terre is that it’s very flexible and easy to get around. With your included rail card, you can hop on and off the frequent trains as you please. So, if you don’t feel like walking then hop on a train instead.
All the walks are very easy to navigate by using our app.
The rolling and rocky Cinque Terre coastline is stunning, but as you’d probably expect the walks along the coast do therefore include elevation gains and losses which can be hard on your knees and are especially tiring on hot sunny days. The terrain is rocky underfoot, so you’ll need walking boots with good grip and ankle support. The traditional paths between the villages often include sections of stone steps on these ascents and descents, which add to the challenge. We strongly recommend taking walking poles and perhaps knee supports if needed. It’s best ahead of time to do some practice walks including stairs and ascents and descents like those you will experience on the trip whilst carrying your day bag. You’ll need to take plenty of water and snacks with you to keep your energy levels up.
There are sections of the walks along cliff edge paths, some of which are unfenced and only wide enough to walk along in single file. This trip may therefore not be ideal for those with a fear of heights or vertigo sufferers.
Discovery | Think of it as a ‘local’s guide’ to the best of the region. It includes a combination of activity and transportation to give you the freedom to explore and cover more ground at your own pace. We do all the research and organisation for you. All you have to do is turn up and enjoy!
Rail and Hike | Perfectly planned itineraries discovering the best of a destination both by train and on foot.
Solo Travellers, Families with Teens
As a guide, we would suggest that the minimum age of traveler this tour would be suitable for is: 5 Years

Includes accommodation in a mixture of small hotels, guest houses, and B&B’s. We hand-pick the accommodation to ensure you enjoy every minute of your stay. A warm welcome, traditional hospitality, and delicious local food and drink come as standard. Also, as this tour travels by rail and we don’t want you having to wheel your luggage all around the city, our accommodation is conveniently located just a short stroll from the railway station. So, you can easily drop your bag off and begin your explorations.
Details of the accommodation we normally use are detailed below. These are subject to availability, and early booking is highly recommended, as this is a popular area.
We book en suite and air-conditioned rooms as standard. If there are no en suite rooms available in an overnight location, we may book a room with shared facilities, but we'll always let you know first if this was the case.
Alternative Accommodation
We'll always try and use the hotels’ shown in the accommodation information. Occasionally, because of limited availability, we may have to accommodate you in alternative hotels which aren’t listed in the description. The alternative accommodation will be of the same or better standard than those described. In case alternative accommodation needs to be booked, supplements may be payable, and we’ll advise you accordingly. If we need to accommodate you a lot further away from the railway station, then we’ll be able to arrange a transfer to take you and your luggage from the train station to your hotel.
Single Rooms & Solo Walkers
This self-guided trip is available to solo walkers for a supplement and is subject to availability. If you require single rooms within your party, we'd be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable. The single and solo room supplements on this tour are higher than normal because the hotels charge the same price for a double for sole occupancy as they do for when two people are sharing the room (and then of course the costs is split between them).
Meals
Breakfast is included each morning. In Italy, this is generally a light continental breakfast. Lunch and dinner aren't included but are available from your hotel or nearby restaurants. Your accommodation may be able to provide a packed lunch on request and this can be booked on arrival.
On this tour, you’ll get a taste of a range of different cuisines, as what’s popular in each region and city varies. Such as in Florence, offal is a firm favourite. Why not be brave and try lampredotto and trippa, a popular street food sandwich filled with beef stomach, or perhaps just stick with the Brunello wine and a refreshing pistachio gelato? You can’t go to Italy without grabbing a slice (or three) of pizza for your lunch. In Rome, the Pizza all Romana is normally topped with olives, artichokes, egg, and prosciutto ham. Liguria is the place where pesto was first made, so whilst exploring the Cinque Terre it would be rude not to have a taste of the pesto-covered gnocchi.
Additional Nights
You may want to spend some extra nights along the route. There are loads to explore in each of the cities on this tour or perhaps you’d prefer to spend some more time relaxing beside the sea. If you’re interested in this, then please have a chat with our Sales team who’ll be happy to get a quote together for you.
Hotel Upgrades
In Florence, we have an upgraded option to B&B la Terrazza sul Duomo, that’s just a stone’s throw away from Florence’s impressive cathedral. So, you can head out early and beat the queues to climb the tower and take in the view. It’s worth noting that this B&B is around a 10 min walk from the train station whereas the Eco Urban B&B is only 5mins. The standard of the bedrooms in both B&B’s are very similar.
The route isn’t waymarked in the cities, but the Cinque Terre walks are well sign posted.
Navigation is straightforward as you can use the Macs Adventure app which has maps, GPS tracks, and daily route info. Simply download the GPS tracks for offline use and follow the route on your phone with the assurance that navigation will be simple, and you can’t get lost.
You will find more information on downloading the app in your Macs Adventure Account.

This trip is available to book from mid-March to the end of October. You can start your holiday on any date in the season. However, this tour is not available from the 1st July until the 31st August as this is the hottest time of year, and availability in the hotels is almost impossible to secure due to it being the Italian summer holidays.
Peak Season Availability:
Early booking is essential to secure the best accommodation for you throughout the peak spring and autumn months. If you're interested in travelling during these months, then we may require some flexibility. We'll always try our best to get you confirmed on the date you wish to travel.
Time of Year
On the Cinque Terre coast, the springs months of mid-March, and April, offer warm sunshine, fewer crowds, and pleasant walking conditions. May is when most wildflowers are coming into bloom. In May and June, the villages are in full swing with many visitors, but it’s simple to escape the crowds on the walking trails. The autumn months of September and October are also a favourable time of year, boasting cooler weather and a striking landscape made up of autumnal colours.
It's worth noting that the earlier or later in the year you choose to travel the higher the likelihood of rain (October-March is when the rainfall is more likely). Also, before Easter and in late October some local shops, and restaurants may have reduced opening times or have closed for the winter.
If you’re looking to visit the Vatican Museums, then you may need to pick your tour dates around this to make sure your time in Rome falls at a good point to visit. It’s best to avoid the first Sunday of the month and over Easter as it’s extremely busy at those times. You should also check the Vatican website for the scheduled closure dates. We recommend booking their Prime Experience which allows you to get in an hour before general public opening, making the experience a lot less crowded and more pleasant. If you are going to head in during general opening times then it’s best to do so after 1 pm (afternoons are quieter than mornings) and to avoid weekends, especially in high season.
Florence has its own airport (FLR), but the range of flights arriving here is quite limited (there are some flights from London). Not to worry though as there is also Pisa Airport nearby which is a main hub with lots of flight choices or you could keep it simple and book return flights in/out of Rome (FCO or CIA Airports).
As for how to get from the airport into the city. It’s a short tram ride from Florence Airport taking about 15 mins.
From Pisa, you can take a special “people mover” from the airport to the Pisa Centrale Train Station and then a train to Florence. They leave every 30 mins, and the journey takes approx. 1 hour 15.
From Rome, you can take a Leonardo Express Train into Rome centre and then a train to Florence. They leave frequently and the journey will take about 2 hours.
Please check the Trenitalia website for timetable planning.
If you’re after a journey that is more of an experience in itself, then it’s also possible to reach Florence by train from London via Paris, Lyon, and Turin. So maybe take the long way to the start of the tour. You could book yourself accommodation in these amazing cities en route to see even more of Europe’s highlights. Websites such as Trainline, and Rome 2 Rio are useful tools for arranging rail travel.

You can take a direct train from Rome Termini to Fiumicino Airport or there are several bus lines too. Either way, the journey takes between 45 mins-1 hour. Alternatively, we’re happy to arrange private taxi transfers for you. Please contact the Macs team for a quote.
No luggage transfer is included on this holiday, due to the ease of you taking your own bag with you on and off the trains between overnight destinations. There’s no point-to-point walking on this holiday, so no long walks lugging your luggage. You just arrive by train, walk the short distance to your accommodation, drop off your bag, and go off exploring. It couldn’t be simpler. We do recommend taking a compact wheelie case with you to make stowing it on the trains easy and walking with your luggage effortless.
The distances and ascent/descents are approximations of the recommended routes.
Excursions
For exploring the cities you may find that buying a tourist card to get entrance into several attractions is your cheapest option (depending on how many you’re hoping to go and see) rather than buying individual tickets for each thing. In Venice there is the City Pass, in Florence the Firenze Card, and in Rome the Rome Tourist Card or the Roma Pass.
There are some optional excursions available to book on this tour, these include:

Online Documents
At Macs Adventure we care about the environment. We’re taking action to minimise the impact we have by converting the majority of our tour documentation for online delivery. On this tour, all your detailed tour information will be digitally delivered. You'll have access to this info via “My Account” on our website and the Macs Adventure app.
Our pre-departure info pack has detailed advice and a packing list on what to bring. This includes walking gear, hiking boots, rain gear, day pack and other specifics.
Experience the area's highlights and all it has to offer beyond the usual stomping grounds. By meeting locals, learning about their traditions, and discovering their heritage, you'll feel fully immersed in the place.
By combining rail options with gentle walks, optional excursions, and free time, you have the flexibility and freedom to cover more ground and explore more in the way you want.
Each accommodation has been hand-selected for its convenience, comfort, and warm welcome.
Not sure what there is to do or where to eat? From the cosiest café and the best cocktail spot to must-see sites and hidden historical landmarks, our Macs app gives personal recommendations and insider suggestions, so you don’t have to worry about researching.Unfortunately, we’re unable to accommodate walkers with dogs as many of the accommodation providers we use don’t accept pets.
We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as the places visited on this tour are extremely popular, especially during April, May, and September. However, we'll always try and accommodate your plans.
It’s easy! Just use your smartphone to go to the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android). Search for "Macs Adventure" and download our free app. Use the same email address to sign up to the app as we have against your booking, and then all the details of your bookings with us will be shown there.
