Self Guided Hiking Vacation on the Coast of Menorca

  • Follow Menorca’s historic Cami de Cavalls route.
  • Relaxed walking along beaches and through olive groves and pine woods.
  • Swimming in the turquoise sea amongst sandy coves.
  • Quaint fishing villages and port towns such as Ciutadella.
  • Tucking into Queso de Mahon and fresh seafood, delicious local specialities.

A relaxed self-guided walking holiday along the ancient Cami de Cavalls path circling the island of Menorca.

An established and waymarked GR route, the Cami de Cavalls dates back to the 16th century and was once a military road connecting the watchtowers of the island. Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere reserve and you’ll see a great diversity of plant and bird life.

With easy-going walking and varied terrain such as cliffs and quiet farmland, you are sure to enjoy your time in Menorca, especially as you will stay in comfortable hotels and guesthouses in picturesque port towns.

Arrive Menorca / Mahón

Arrive in Mahon– the island’s small but lively capital.  Enjoy the elegant architecture which harks back to the English occupation of the 18th century.

Take a wander around the Plaça de la Constitució square and perhaps tuck into a meal of freshly caught seafood.

Overnight: Mahon

DAY 2 Walk from Es Grau to Port d’Addaia

A short transfer takes you to the fishing village of Es Grau, where you will start your walk. A well waymarked route takes you through varied terrain today. Passing swampy dunes, a lagoon, rocky coastal paths, salt flats and the lighthouse of Cape Favaritx.

Finish the day with a transfer from Port d’Addaia to Fornells where you will be staying tonight.

Walk: 19km, 6 hrs, approx 250m ascent / 200 descent

Overnight: Fornells

DAY 3
Walk from Cap de Cavalleria to Cala Pilar

Today you will be dropped off at Cap de Cavalleria where you will re-join the Cami de Cavalls. The walk today is along the rugged coastline and through the most mountainous region on the island. Passing only one beach with a café-restaurant, embrace the otherwise unspoilt surroundings as you walk.

Transfer from the end of the walk back to Fornells for your overnight.

Walk: 16km, 5-6 hrs, approx 450m ascent / 450 descent

Overnight: Fornells

Walk from Cala Pilar to Cala Morell

You will be dropped off at Platja Cala Pilar where you pick up the trail once more. Head inland today for about 10km, negotiate a few ascents before the landscape starts to open up again. This area is where the famous local cheese (Queso de Mahon) is made and you are sure to pass dairy cows along the way.

A shorter day today means you will have time in the afternoon to relax in Cala Morell before being transferred to your hotel in Ciutadella.

Walk: 14km, 4 hrs, approx 250m ascent/descent

Overnight: Ciutadella

Walk from Cala Morell to Ciutadella

Return to Cala Morell and begin today’s walk. Follow the trail along low walls and bizarrely shaped ’barracas’, shepard’s huts,  where the local livestock take refuge from the Tramuntana wind. Arrive at Punta Nati lighthouse and soak up the views and quiet before setting off again.

Next is the busy coastal town of Cala Piques. Time-permitting, take a dip and lounge on the beach. From here you have the option to continue walking along the coast to Ciutadella or catch a bus for the last 5km.

Walk: 18km, 6 hrs, approx 150m ascent / 170 descent

Overnight: Ciutadella

Walk from Son Xoriguer to Cala Galdana

After taking a local bus to Son Xoriguer start today’s walk through initially flat pastures passing pine groves and wild olive trees. You will then come across some of Mallorca’s most beautiful beaches. Today’s walk is quite short and easy going so you have plenty of time to explore them.

Finish in Cala Galdana and meet your transfer to take you back to Ciutadella.

Walk: 15km, 4.5 hrs, approx 100m ascent / 100m descent

Overnight: Ciutadella

Circular Walk from Cala Galdana

Another easy day awaits. Start with a local bus transfer to Cala Galdana and re- join the Cami de Cavalls. You will be walking inland first, crossing the limestone plateau of Migjorn where you might catch a glimpse of the Mallorcan turtles in the deep crevices.

The second part of today’s walk takes you off the official route to follow the coastal path of ’El Litoral’. Again there is ample opportunity to swim in the clear blue waters. Finish at Cala Galdana and meet your transfer to Mahon.

Walk: 17 km, 5.5 hrs, 350m ascent / descent

Overnight: Mahon

Departure Day

Check out after breakfast and make you way to Mahon airport for your onward travel.
