Hiking in the Eastern Alps

Eastern Alps

Highlights
  • Walking through flower filled alpine meadows beneath the snow capped peaks of the Julian Alps
  • Soaking up the views along the best sections of the Via Alpina
  • Hiking high trails above the tree-line, easily reached by road, chairlift and cable car in the Rila and Pirin mountains
  • Paths to Musala, Polezhan and Vihren mountain summits, past lakes and rock cirques
  • Relaxing on the shores of serene Lake Bled beneath imposing Bled Castle and a backdrop of the Julian Alps
  • The toe dipping charms of crystal clear Lake Bohinj in the heart of Triglav National Park

Hiking in the Eastern Alps sets you out on a quieter path than most other Alpine walks. The Julian Alps of Slovenia and the peaks of Rila and Pirin in Bulgaria may not have the height advantage of many of the larger Alpine mountains, but they are still entirely beautiful with wonderful walking and often not another soul in sight.

In Slovenia, you can walk the High Trails of the Julian Alps to get an experience similar to the classic Alpine treks or if you want to take it a little bit easier you can explore the Mountains and Lakes of the Julian Alps. Bulgaria's High Peaks & Lakes of the Rila & Pirinshowcase the stunning, but rarely visited Bulgarian peaks on a real voyage of discovery in this up-and-coming tourist destination.
