5 activity holidays for families in 2013
Research shows that both parents and children want to spend more time outdoors. Kids say they would relish the freedom to climb trees, build dens and try new activities such as mountain biking and canoeing. Meanwhile, adults see the outdoors environment as the perfect place to enjoy quality time with their family. In 2013, why not make a resolution to spend more time being outdoors with your family?
Here we bring you five great active holidays for families. Cycling the Danube: This flat, and often downhill, route along a dedicated cycle path is the perfect way for families to enjoy cycling together. There are lots of stop off points along the way to keep little ones happy and because your luggage is transferred for you between comfortable accommodations you only need to worry about your own pedalling and the lovely views all around you. Go paddling: Canoeing and kayaking are simple to learn and offer an up-close-and-personal way to see the landscape. The west coast of Scotland, Croatia and Sardinia are three fabulous places to set off for a family paddling adventure. One trip, offered by Wilderness Scotland, is a family-friendly holiday in Arisaig in Scotland’s Highlands. You’ll learn to kayak on the three-day trip and likely witness a wealth of amazing wildlife.
Walk the Trossachs: If you fancy a short walking break and you are a family with older children, this Trossachs Trail walking holiday is the ideal escape. You’ll enjoy exploring the picturesque lochs, glens and mountains of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park on foot. And you can even throw in a history lesson when you inform the kids that the Trossachs inspired Sir Walter Scott to write Lady of the Lake and Rob Roy! No one ever said that education had to be boring! Oh, and while you’re in the area, you might like to add another treat to the schedule and visit Go Ape at Aberfoyle. Both adults and children can enjoy swinging around like monkeys!
Family beach adventure: Head off to Portugal for a tailormade family adventure holiday with Aqua-Ventura. Sunshine and adventure are the key words for this trip that includes a host of exciting water-based activities, including sea kayaking, diving, a boat trip to see dolphins and climbing. And at the end of each day, you can refuel on home-cooked food (and plenty of it!). Cycle France’s colourful coast: Family groups will relish the warm weather and colourful scenery on this seven-day Brittany: Cycling the Granite Coast trip.  You'll pedal past pink granite rocks sculpted by the wind and tides, pristine white sandy beaches and a turquoise sea.  Ah, we can smell the sea from here... Tell us about your favourite outdoors holiday for your family.
