Adventure of the Week: Best of the Burren Way

Possibly the most perfect Irish package of walking, music, history, tradition, rugged coasts, and craic.

Burren rock formations

Distinctive rock formations in the Burren.

In a Nutshell

Tick off the highlights of Walking Ireland's West Coast, a long-distance trail on a 6-night Irish walking holiday, including seeing the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands in Galway Bay.

Distance: 85km over 5 Walking Days

Grading: Easy to Moderate.

Where?

The Burren is a region of south-west Ireland in County Clare. Characterised by karst limestone rock formations which give the area a "moonscape" effect, it is a popular destination not only due to its fascinating geology, but also to a wealth of traditional culture & history.

Pony on Inishmore

Friendly locals on Insishmore are not always human!

Doolin, where you will spend 2 nights on this itinerary, is a renowned heart of Irish traditional music. The nearby Aran Islands at the mouth of Galway bay include Inishmore, where we suggest a loop walk to take in prehistoric sites (plus the opportunity to buy a traditional Aran jumper!).

Why Walk Here?

Everything you dream of in an Irish experience is here. It's really that simple!

Guinness on the Burren Way

Why wouldn't you?

Enjoy a pint of the black stuff whilst listening to traditional music, visit one of coastal Ireland's biggest draws the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, experience Galway Bay's Aran Islands with their pre-history and warm welcome. Anyone who loves nature and the outdoors will appreciate the geology of the cracked rock landscapes, created over 300 million years ago.

Aran Islands Aran Jumpers

Pick up a souvenir on the Aran Islands

A walk on Ireland's wild Atlantic coastline is one of life's great moments to collect and treasure. All with a soundtrack of bodhran beats and crashing seas. Sláinte!

Planning & Preparation

The walking is graded easy-moderate but the day of walking via the Cliffs of Moher does include some ascent and descent, you should make sure you're prepared for a long distance trail by building up your walking fitness.

Walking on Inishmore

Walking on Inishmore

We suggest walking this trail between April and October. The weather in Ireland is notoriously unpredictable, but pack some waterproofs and enjoy the welcome and the shelter of a good pub, and nothing will dampen the experience. Shannon airport is the most convenient, but you could also fly to Dublin and use public transport to Galway, then onward to Liscannor to start the walk. We have lots more information and the full trip details of this quintessentially Irish walking holiday on our website.
