Adventure of the Week: Two Sides of the Matterhorn

To get a real insight into the culture and customs of a region, it pays to immerse yourself in it for a few days. We prefer to do this the active way of course, so what better way to capture the essence of Switzerland than with a twin-centre walking holiday in the shadow of the towering Matterhorn.

In a Nutshell

This walking holiday takes in 2 very different aspects of Swiss life, with walks to match. Distance: The distances vary on this trip depending on what you wish to do.  Walks from 5-15km are available every day, so you can choose what length and style suits you best on any given day. Grade: Easy to Moderate. This trip is about taking it easy, delving into what makes Switzerland tick, so the walking is not too strenuous, leaving your legs fresh for exploring at night.

Where?

Nestled in the Swiss Alps your time here will be spent surrounded by stunning peaks, in one of the most scenic parts of Switzerland. The first half of the tour sees you based in Zermatt, the stylish and iconic Alpine town where you can delve into the best of Swiss cuisine and sample the hidden gem that is Swiss wine. For the second half of the trip, you are stationed in sleepy St Luc, the ultimate Heidi hide-away. With great open vistas of the Alps and a sunny position on the valley slope, you are guaranteed a relaxing time.

Why Walk Here?

It is just one of those places that you have to walk at least once in your life! The Swiss are so geared up for walking, that the routes are impeccably way-marked, so there is no chance of getting lost. You can push yourself and experience the buzz of walking to the Matterhorn base camp or take it easy and investigate some of the historical walks around St Luc and Zermatt. The carpet of Alpine flowers in another draw to this region, painting the valley floor throughout the season. Choose to walk around the three pristine lakes that surround St Luc, drinking in the tranquility of the area with every breath of crisp, clean air.

Planning & Preparation

This 7 Day & 8 Night Matterhorn adventure begins in Zermatt and finishes up in St Luc. It includes bed and breakfast accommodation as well as three delicious dinners. We also include the "Anniviers Liberty Pass” which gives you access to over 20 free activities in the Val d'Anniviers and most local bus services and cable cars/funiculars. To get to Zermatt, you can fly into Geneva, Zurich or Bern and take a train journey right to Zermatt. The Swiss public transport is pretty much the cleanest, most efficient transport in the world, so the transfers to and from Zermatt and St Luc are a pleasure in themselves.
