Hundreds of fans are expected to turn out to honour the late Scottish walker and broadcaster, Tom Weir, at a special celebration event at Loch Lomond this month. On Monday December 29, there will be a musical tribute and unveiling of a new statue to mark the centenary of Tom’s birthday. Recently, a small-scale model of by sculptor Sean Hedges-Quinn, was shown to Tom's widow, 94-year-old Rhona – and now the full-sized sculpture will be unveiled to everyone at Balmaha Bay. Instrumental in raising funds for the memorial has been a Tom Weir Statue Campaign, which launched in February 2012. The adventurer, who died aged 91 in July 2006, is credited as introducing thousands of people to Scotland's great outdoors through his tales of climbing, walking, nature conservation and campaigning. Tom is also fondly remembered for his long-running STV series, Weir's Way, and his Scots Magazine column, which he wrote for 50 years. The Loch Lomond event has been organised by the Tom Weir Memorial Trust and Friends of Loch Lomond. A host of special guests will attend the unveiling, including outdoor writers and broadcasters such as Cameron McNeish and Jimmie MacGregor, Hedges-Quinn and any outdoors fans who would like to pay tribute to the walker who is also famous for his red bobble hat. The event is free, and samples of Tom's favourite brew and snack will be available.
