Walk of the Week - Hadrian&'s Wall
In AD122 Emperor Hadrian was keen to protect the empire that he had long sought to establish.  As part of this he commissioned the building of a wall across northern England to protect it from the barbarians to the north.  1900 years later large chunks of the wall still remain, linking up sites of Roman occupation and deep historical interest and passing through some ruggedly beautiful scenery. This is all linked by one of the first routes Macs Adventure ever organised, Hadrian's Wall Path. [caption id="attachment_15710" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Crag Lough[/caption]

 In a Nutshell

  • Distance: 84 miles.
  • Grading: Moderate. Some steep sections and long days, but the paths are really well laid out and the way marking and documentation are superb.

Where is it?

The wall path runs from Coast to Coast across the waist of England, from Newcastle in the east to Bowness-upon-Solway in the west.  Newcastle is a good hub for air travel, but both ends are very well connected by rail and bus, which is the likeliest form of transport to get you to the start/end.

Why walk it?

Take away all the history associated with the Romans and what you have left is a beautiful week long walk across the north of England.  An endless sea of green stretches out before you, punctuated by crags, rolling hills and great ridges.  Small forests and lakes provide havens for local wildlife and the area is draped in the deepest sense of peace. [caption id="attachment_15714" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Remains of Roman barracks on the route.[/caption] Add in all the Roman history and you have got something incredibly unique, something that is virtually unmissable as one of the worlds greatest long distance walks.  Punctuated by forts, milecastles and turrets, not to mention the wall itself, which is the largest remaining Roman monument, it truly is a walk through history.  To add to the physical structures still in place, the route also has several world-class museums where you can see more of the day to day artefacts used by the Romans who were stationed there as well as gain a deeper understanding of what actually transpired back in those times. Planning to walk Hadrian's Wall Path

There are so many different itineraries for walking the wall depending on how long you want to take, or which sections you want to focus on, all of which can be booked online at macsadventure.com. You can walk it over 5-10 days or just take whichever section you would prefer and spend a few days exploring it. May to September tend to be the best times to walk the route weatherwise, but you can also get some lovely crisp days in Spring that are much quieter walking. You can contact Macs Adventure on info@macsadventure.com for advice or reservation enquiries, or browse macsadventure.com for more trips to inspire adventure on foot.
