A relaxing tour in southern Turkey with walks through ancient ruins, along beaches and on the Lycian Way.

Discover the photogenic lagoon of Olu Deniz, many ancient ruins, such as Xanthos and Phellos and countless views over the deep blue Mediterranean Sea and rugged mountains. With a backdrop of mountains beyond a sparkling sea, the refreshingly undeveloped Turquoise Coast on this stretch of Turkey's southern coast was known in ancient times as Lycia. With a plethora of ancient ruins and a scattering of spectacular bays and pretty coves that this area is famed for.

En route you will walk through local villages and perhaps stop for a cup of local tea, while in the evenings, sit on the terrace of your seaside hotel and enjoy a meal of delicious Turkish culinary delights, which are a fusion of central Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines. You’ve plenty of time to relax and explore Kas, or take a boat ride to one of the Greek Islands.

This Scotsman Newspaper article really transports you to the Turquoise Coast, as you read about their writer's experience.

DAY 1: Arrive in Dalaman. Transfer to Kayakoy

A scenic drive (about 1 hour, 10 minutes), crossing two ranges of forested hills, will bring you to the village of Kayakoy, set in a suspended valley between the bustling town of Fethiye and the busy resort of Olu Deniz. This place is an oasis of calm and on one side of the valley, close to your accommodation, lies the abandoned Greek village of Kaya, once known as Levissi.

Overnight: Villa Rhapsody, Kayakoy

A family-owned property offering complete tranquillity, spectacular scenery and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. All the rooms have a balcony and free Wifi. Enjoy relaxing by the delightful poolside bar and perhaps eat dinner on the outside terrace. The food here is all freshly home-made and delicious!

DAY 2: Walk to Olu Deniz Beach

The beginning of today’s walk will take you through the ruins of Levissi (alternately known as the ghost town of Kayakoy), but should you want to spend longer wandering its deserted lanes there will be time later in the day.

Olu Deniz is often described as Turkey's most photographed beach and lagoon and your tour is carefully times so you can see it at its best and uncrowded. After joining the Lycian Way and as you walk, you will see your first view of the photogenic lagoon from above and through the branches of pine trees. At the end of your walk, we recommend a dip in the azure waters of the Mediterranean.

If you arrive back in time, explore the ruins of Levissi, a once-bustling town, nestled against the Taurus Mountains. This is not an ancient city, but a modern ruin deserted for political reasons in the 1920’s. Wandering through these streets provides a moving memory of a tragic human drama.

Overnight: Villa Rhapsody, Kayakoy

Walk: 8km

DAY 3: Kayakoy Loop via Afluke

Today’s circular route provides plenty of amazing views and after walking through a shady pine forest make your way over some rocky terrain to visit the ruined Greek Orthodox monastery of Afkule. Set on cliffs overlooking the sea to the west of Kayakoy, it is not a visit for the faint-hearted or those with vertigo as it is quite close the cliff’s edge.

At the end of the walk it is possible to make your way down to Gemiler Beach and take a refreshing swim.

Overnight: Villa Rhapsody, Kayakoy

Walk: 13km

DAY 4: Transfer to Kas via ruins of Xanthos

Today transfer (2 hours) to the lovely seaside town of Kas, which is where you will spent your next few nights. If you wish you have the option to stop and visit the extensive ruins of Xanthos, once the largest city in the ancient province of Lycia. This city was witness (and participant) to two great tragedies, both resulting in its complete destruction and there is still much to see. (Many of its most easily removed treasures were taken, by ship, to the British Museum around 1840). The necropolis of Xanthos is particularly fine.

An alternative stop combines combines a swim with historical culture in the ancient harbour city of Patara. During Roman times it became Lycia's most important city, even surpassing nearby Xanthos. Its parliament, the meeting place for all the representatives from towns and cities across the province/state of Lycia, is often quoted as the ancient world's best example of a democratic system. Much of the city lies under the sand blown over it from the 15km-long beach.

Overnight: Hotel Narr, Kas

This hotel is in a very quiet location and only a 5-minute walk from the marina. The views over the sea from the patio are fabulous and you will be welcomed warmly. The rooms are all generously-proportioned and offer free Wifi.

DAY 5: Three Beaches Walk

Your walk today takes you partially on the Lycian Way and begins with a 15-minute transfer up into the hills inland to the vicinity of Bayindir Village. During your walk you can take a to swim at Limanagzi Beach and also at Big Pebble Beach which is just before the return into Kas.

For those who prefer to spend more time relaxing and swimming at Limanagzi Beach, the last 1.5 hours of the hike can be cut and a frequent water taxi can be used to return to Kas from the beach. (Payable locally at around €5).

Overnight: Hotel Narr, Kas

Walk: 11 or 14km

DAY 6: Ancient Phellos to Kas

After breakfast take a 15 minute transfer, through a couple of small villages to a ridge at about 800m where you will begin today’s walk.

With stunning views, both inland and to the sea, the first part of the hike follows the ridge as far as an abandoned ancient city whose ruins are still lost among the undergrowth. Having re-discovered and explored the once-enclosed 'noble necropolis', and enjoyed the views, the big descent to Kaş begins. Along the way you will pass through small villages where you can refill your bottles of drinking water.

Overnight: Hotel Narr, Kas

Walk: 14km

DAY 7: Explore Kas or optional trip to a Greek Island

There are many options on offer today. Perhaps you would like to explore Kaş (pronounced ‘cash’) a town considered by many to be the heart of Lycia and the jewel in the Turkish Mediterranean crown. It is an attractive, cosmopolitan little harbour town with a relaxed, laid back atmosphere; the town square, set on the waterfront, has tea-gardens, bars, cafes and restaurants in which to while away some people-watching hours. There is also a network of tiny, paved lanes to walk through and many shops to browse in. There are many excursions, both cultural and activity-based to consider.

Perhaps time your departure so that you can enjoy the Friday market or try a boat trip along the Turkish coast to the 'sunken city' of Aperlae or across to the Greek island of Kastelorizo. Sea kayaking and river canoeing can also be organised locally, as can the visits to Greek Islands.

Overnight: Hotel Narr, Kas
