Activity Grades

Our grading guidelines should give you a better idea of what to expect on your trip; how challenging the activity (or activities) will be. The grade applies to the overall intensity of the holiday, so some days may be a little tougher than stated and some a little bit easier.

You know your own capabilities best, so whilst we are all for challenging yourself, it is very important to consider your fitness and experience carefully while selecting a trip.

The activity grade will help you choose the right adventure, and enjoy it comfort and safety (whilst having a lot of fun). If you have any questions or concerns, we're always here to offer advice.

Important Notes on Walking Grades

All walking grades are based not only on daily distances, but also on terrain, elevation gain and loss and altitude. Not all distances are exact within the grading system but are designed to be a guideline and best represent the trip’s level. For example, a trip with approximately 20km per day could be graded moderate rather than moderate to strenuous because the terrain is almost completely flat, or a trip with daily distances around 23km km per day could be graded as strenuous is there are some steep hill to negotiate along the way. Ask your specialist if you have any concerns at all about selecting the right trip.

We had a great walking holiday on La Gomera. The trip was organised at the last minute (within 3 weeks of travel) and Macs managed to pull it together with some minor changes to the published itinerary. All the logistics worked well save for the final transfer - but that was sorted easily by a phone call so no harm done. The hotels we stayed in were all of an excellent standard. The walk routes were well signposted anyway but the MACS app provided excellent mapping which enabled us to check we stayed on the right route. A minor gripe in that we were not provided with the detailed route instructions (we managed to get them from another couple who were doing the same walks with MACS) - but in the case of our trip it didn't really matter since the signage and the maps on the app were so good. The team at MACS were responsive to queries and the organisation of the trip was excellent.

The trip was meticulously planned and scheduled. You were never obliged to follow their itinerary but all the walks suggested were very detailed. The recommended itinerary cleverly covered the island (other than the tourist infested areas) giving you a good overall experience. The hotels were spot on as well and all we had to do was turn up.
  • Mr Stewart Walker 22/11/2021
Clear and easy communication. Really helpful and explicit. Providing good guidance and information about everything in the tour.

We worked with Marie as our local host and she was outstanding. She arranged for us to go on a boat tour where we saw amazing birds and sea life including otters, sea lions, and seals. I felt like I was on the discovery channel. She truly cared about or trek and it showed in all of her attention to detail with directions, dining, and points of interest. I highly recommend her! She made the Santa Cruz to Monterey Bay a truly memorable trip!

    Excellent organisation
  • Anonymous 17/11/2021
The service was great and the ground team was professional and experienced.
  • Mr Nicholas Brown 17/11/2021
Definitely we will continue choosing Macs Adventures as our provider for walking holidays.
  • Ms Kathryn Rudman 11/11/2021
The service was very good. The guide was there at the airport for us. Everyone was on time and the luggage was moved from hotel to hotel without problems.
  • Mrs Dorothy Coverdale 08/11/2021
Great organization. Would definitely recommend to others and would consider booking another holiday. A little disappointed that we stayed in bigger hotels and would have preferred smaller guest houses, but with Covid we understood that there were many restrictions.
  • Anonymous 07/11/2021
This particular tour is not run very often. And because of that the maps are not up to current conditions and land marks. Many discrepancies and wrong turns, I was very displeased with the mapping for the walks and they were not on GPS as stated they would be. And this was an issue. The country side is beautiful and small towns are amazing however when you are lost for hours at a time it becomes very stressful. The accommodatioms are very well picked and in the perfect locations. Very pleased with the B&B's and small hotels. Mac Tours uses a local company for transport and your handler from place to place. They are the BEST! If not for them this experience would of been a bust.

Top rated, third adventure and they always get it right. Book staff is incredible
  • Anonymous 06/11/2021
This was my third trip and I would definitely use them again. A little change in our Macs organizer we started Booking Process made it it a little confusing . And we all agreed that it should’ve been easier for each member of the group to log in and out. With four people in different cities it seems silly to only send one person materials. The maps were good and pretty accurate as were the descriptions. It was helpful that we were able to arrange the COVID-19 testing for the return trip ahead of time. The drivers worked out well to and from Naples. The rooms were comfortable And the hotels were welcoming. Breakfast were generous; All four of us were disappointed at the ubiquitous use of coffee pods and coffee was mediocre everywhere. The luggage transfers were all seamless and excellent. The roots and scenery were excellent with alternatives available:We also appreciated the local bus and fairy schedules provided.
  • Ms Elizabeth Avila 06/11/2021
Good choice of hotels and luggage transfer went smoothly. I left only 4 stars as they messed up the charges for the 3rd person in our group which happened to be myself. I was charged extra and supposed to have a single room for myself when in actuality there were 3 of us sharing one room. I am still waiting for the reimbursement after more than 3 weeks

The US/Canada representatives were very patient with the many questions we had and changes to our dates. Every person we spoke with was kind and pleasant. However, it was very difficult to reach anyone by phone while we were planning the trip. We were forced to communicate almost entirely by email which was not efficient and sometimes there were long lag times before receiving a reply. Also the format for the email strings made it difficult to follow. We never got the sense that any of the representatives knew anything specific or first hand about our requested itinerary. It would have been far more satisfactory to communicate sooner with the local operator who could have easily and fully answered our questions and concerns. Also, we did not get full details before the trip about what the local operator would provide, for example we unnecessarily carried bike locks and bike packs with us when they were provided by the local operator. Overall, the communication was lacking.
  • Anonymous 06/11/2021
    Excellent trip, great accommodations.
  • Ms Marisa Laursen 01/11/2021
Absolutely every single thing about our Macs Adventure trip was a dream come true. Everyone at Macs was top-notch - caring, efficient, timely, friendly - and with a good sense of fun and adventure. We loved our experience SO MUCH!
  • Robert and Pat 30/10/2021
Macs and their in-country partner in Tuscany were responsive when an issue cropped up. Step by step instructions were great!
  • Anonymous 30/10/2021
We had a good trip, but I don't feel that I can give Macs credit for that. They contracted with a local business, Slow Adventure, and Macs basically only provided advertising for that company. Furthermore, before we realized that was the arrangement, I tried to get some advance information about trip details (of the sort that Macs has provided in all of our previous 6 trips with Macs), and they were not helpful, nor did they direct me to the Slow Adventure website, which would have answered the questions. I think Macs should be more forthcoming about such arrangements from the start.
  • Mr Rolf Hoffmann 30/10/2021
You were very responsive to our requests……sometimes I had to do your work though, eg booking of hotel in Ruedesheim. Your ship schedule was from 2017!!!! Overall, wonderful trip but balance needs to be rejigged: three days of hard walking then basically nothing left for the remaining days……
  • Dr. NIR SHAMIR 30/10/2021
Hotel selection was generally very poor, wrong information was given on hotel grading and very poor hotel was provided. Mistake in hiking instruction did not help.
