Highlights

  • Exploring Stockholm and its archipelago on foot and by boat.
  • The forests, lakes and beaches of Sörmland, a nature lover's paradise.
  • The charming 17th century town of Trosa on the banks of the Baltic Sea.
  • Easy walking along coastal paths, quiet trails and beside sandy beaches.
  • Relaxing in the spa at Nynäshamn, with views across the ocean!

Just a stone’s throw away from the charming city of Stockholm, you will find Sweden’s southernmost wilderness, Sörmland, and the sprawling archipelago of 24,000 islands spreading far out into the Baltic waters.

After spending a night in ‘Venice of the North’, Stockholm, head out to the countryside. Following easy coastal paths and well-marked trails, discover numerous nature reserves, hidden sandy beaches, tranquil forests, colourful clapboard cottages, and regal manor houses dating back to the 17th century.

Day 1: Arrive Stockholm

Commonly referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’, beautiful Stockholm is the perfect start to your tour. Its unique location over 14 islands, combined with colourful architecture and medieval history, make it a fascinating place to explore.

Depending on when you arrive, you can either take your time to wander the old town of Gamla Stan, enjoy a walk through Stockholm’s Ecopark, or head out to the ‘Soder’ region of Stockholm and walk the many quaint alleys passing historic buildings and a handful of impressive viewpoints across the city.

Overnight: Rex Hotel or Hotel Hellstens Malmgrad, Stockholm

Both our hotels in Stockholm are located in convenient city centre locations and offer modern, tastefully decorated rooms.

Day 2: Transfer to Tullgarn Palace, Walk to Trosa

A short transfer (approx. 1hr) this morning takes you to the impressive 18th century Tullgarn Palace.  You can take an optional guided tour of the palace before starting your walk to Trosa.

You will follow the Sörmlandsleden trail, which winds its way along the coastline, past historic monuments and Kömote beach, where it is possible to take a quick swim! There are several wonderful viewpoints en-route.

Day 3: Stendörren & Sävö

A 30 minute transfer this morning brings you to Stendörren nature reserve.  What makes this archipelago unique is its intriguing system of suspension bridges, which you use to walk across the many islands. Enjoy an optional (and refreshing!) swim in the Baltic waters before travelling by boat to Sävö island nature reserve in the Sörmland archipelago. Pick up the Sörmlandsleden hiking trail which leads you around the island. Travel by boat back to the mainland,  follow the trail to Sandvik beach, then transfer back to Trosa.

In the afternoon board the boat for your journey to Nynäshamn (3h), located in the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago.  Taking advantage of the long daylight hours, enjoy an optional evening walk along the ‘Strandvägen— a small, winding road following the coast with wide open views across the horizon.

You will have access to the hotel spa for the next couple of days which is a lovely way to relax and enjoy the incredible views!

This morning you head with public transport to Häringe-Hammersta nature reserve which is located on two coastal peninsulas. It is a region of manor houses, giant oaks, broad-leaved woods, coniferous forest and saltwater bays. The deciduous forest in this area is one of the richest botanical concentrations in the Stockholm region, and hosts a large number of oak trees. The birdlife is rich, and white-tailed eagles are common.

If you didn’t fit in the walk along Strandvägen yesterday, you have another chance today, or why not relax in the hotel’s spa looking out across the ocean!

After drinking in your fill of vistas, you have the option of cycling or being transferred to Utö island and the main village of Gruvbryggan. This former mining town buzzes with life during the summer and has a good selection of restaurants and cafes.

Comments about macs adventure Walking Stockholm's Archipelago:

We really enjoyed this holiday. The tough walk came first and was followed by avoid variety of trails in beautiful scenery and memorable boat trips. The hotels were all over individual and welcoming. The breakfasts were SO good. Carmen organised things very well and was extremely helpful when my husband left his passport behind in a hotel safe for which we are grateful and thankful. Highly recommended, particularly if you have remembered to pack mosquito repellant.
