Highlights

  • The medieval hilltop villages of Grožnjan and Motovun, each with their unique charms
  • The Momjan muscat wine and white truffles famous to the region
  • The popular coastal city of Poreč with its UNESCO World Heritage listed Basilica
  • The picturesque fishing port of Rovinj and its colourful old town

Sample local wines and delicacies, while you soak up the Mediterranean sun and meet the locals on your cycling holiday. Your journey takes in the best Istria has to offer, from the untouched interior with its medieval hilltop villages, to the glistening Adriatic Coast and its popular resorts.

Starting out from Buje, in the north of the Istrian Peninsula, you will soon see why this area is often referred to as the “Adriatic Tuscany”, with its rolling green hills and terracotta roofed villages. Leaving Buje, cycle through the Mirna River Valley on your way to the artists colony of Grožnjan. Passing through the village of Oprtajl, you will enjoy views of the Mirna River as you head towards Livade, the truffle centre of Istria. Finally you will reach your next stop, the Medieval hilltop town of Motovun with views over the valley below.

From Motovun, you will cycle back out to the Adriatic Coast to the popular coastal town of Poreč. On the way stop in Visnjan and visit the many wine cellars, sampling some of the Malvasia wine produced in this area. The next day starts with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site Euphrasiana Basilica. Your final destination is the colourful coastal port of Rovinj. Still an active fishing village, it is now also a popular tourist destination. Explore the narrow streets, passing market stalls brimming with local produce and handicrafts. Walk along the waterfront taking in the warm Mediterranean sun setting before stopping at one of the many seafood restaurants to celebrate the end of your cycling adventure.

DAY 1: Arrive in Buje

Buje is a charming hilltop town located 10km inland from the Adriatic, where you will spend your first three nights. Take some time to visit the 16th century Baroque church, wander through the old city, and enjoy views over the surrounding landscape dominated by olive groves and vineyards.

*Please note that you can opt to take a transfer from Pula Airport direct to your hotel in Buje (where an evening presentation will be offered). This transfer is at a supplement; please contact us for details.

Overnight: Casa la Parenzana ***

The family run Casa la Parenzana is a peaceful oasis, and is ideally situated for exploring the highlights of the surrounding area. It takes is name from the “Parenzana“ - the old disused Austro Hungarian railway line which once connected Trieste with Poreč. The old railway is currently under restoration as a bike trail.

DAY 2: Circular cycle to Umag

Leaving Buje you will start with an easy downhill ride to the coast, on the northernmost point of the Istrian Peninsula. Visit Savudrija, one of the oldest lighthouses in the Adriatic, built in 1818. Continue south along the trail to the small town of Umag, which was founded by a Roman nobleman who decided to make it his summer residence. Explore the city walls and fortifications and wander the streets with their Venetian houses and baroque buildings. On the way back to Buje visit a wine cellar and have the opportunity to sample the local Muscat wine.

Sample some traditional Istrian dishes in the local restaurant. The trail continues on through the southern villages, before reaching the coastal town of Vrsar. With a commanding view of the coast, it was natural for Vrsar to become a defended fortress. Only parts of the fortification system, built in the 12th century, have been preserved, but the fortress-castle used as a summer residence of the Poreč bishops, is well worth a look. After Vrsar the trail passes Funtana fishing village, and Zelena and Plava Laguna villages on the way back to Poreč.

From Bale you will pass the prehistoric hilltown of Monkodonja which was inhabited around 1800-1200BC. Continuing on you will reach your final destination, the colourful fishing port of Rovinj. Rovinj was originally an island, but the channel that once separated it from the mainland was filled in to form this picturesque coastal town. Wander the narrow streets of the old town, and explore the many historic attractions such as the baroque Church of St. Euphemia. Frequently Asked Questions

We are often asked the following questions and I hope that you will find the answers useful. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries.

How fit do I need to be?

The cycling is graded easy to moderate so you will enjoy the holiday more if you already enjoy an active lifestyle. Daily cycles are mainly on local roads with some short connections on main roads, but generally the cycling is relaxed and the traffic light. If you have a good level of fitness you will have no problem with the cycle

Which is the best airport to fly to?

Trieste or Pula are convenient. From Trieste we recommend you pre-book airport transfers as public transport is very limited. From Pula you can either pre-book airport transfers or use the local bus services.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this holiday is extremely popular especially in the spring/summer months when temperatures are warm and local festivals are on. Please note you can start this holiday on any day of the week. You will find up to date availability on our website and we will always try and accommodate your plans.

What personal equipment do I need?

You will need comfortable cycling clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack, warm clothing in the early/late part of the year and hats etc during the summer. We supply a detailed packing list with your information pack.

When is the best time of year?

Spring in Croatia is sublime and April, May and June are absolutely lovely. Autumn is probably my favourite time of year as the landscape is made up of a gold and red pallet so September and October are unmissable. July and August can be hot so you will have to start early to miss the heat of the day, although the towns and villages are busier with many seasonal festivals on which is great. You can view weather details for the region here.

Comments about macs adventure Istria's Wine Roads:

We're a loosely organized travel group from Canada - the make-up of our team varies, as does the nature of our expeditions. We've done back-pack multi -night treks, kayak trips and hikes where a tour operator carries our bags from place to place. This was our first venture on bicycles and, based on the experience, it probably won't be our last. Our main concern was that 2 of our group are not really cyclists and were worried about keeping up. e- bikes, however are a wonderful equalizer!!, Why did we choose Croatia? - mostly because none of us had been there - but it turned out to be a fantastic choice. The tour organization was excellent, route selection (for the most part) was great and the scenery, food and wine along the way was worth the long flying time to get there
