Danube Bike & Boat Holidays

Get the most out of your holiday by cycling and cruising the Blue Danube River that flows from Western Germany to the Black Sea. Bike & Boat is the perfect concept for those looking for a relaxing cycling holiday; bike during the day and then unwind, dine, and sleep on board your comfortable boat by night. Enjoy great camaraderie, dedicated cycle paths and the opportunity to visit plenty of historic European cities without the hassle of packing and unpacking.

Each day in the saddle is a vastly different experience which makes the Danube Cycle Path a firm favourite in our cycling range. The route follows the banks of the river for most of the way, so you don’t need to spend a lot of time worrying about traffic. Leisurely cycle beside the Danube as it passes through quiet forests, past majestic castles and along dramatic river bends. The Danube is the ultimate bike & boat destination, so hop on board and enjoy the best of both worlds on a bike & boat tour.

Macs Adventure has been booking cycling holidays along the Danube since 2012. We have a strong relationship with our local partner in Austria and combined with the knowledge of our team you can rest assured that you have booked with confidence. Simply choose one of our itineraries and we will help you plan and prepare for your Danube adventure!

Discover Danube Bike & Boat

  • A typical day on board
    A typical day on board

A typical day onboard starts with an energizing breakfast to fuel you for the day of cycling ahead! And before getting your bike from the storage you will likely be asked to select your preferred choices for your three-course dinner at night. Our Danube Bike & Boat tours also include a picnic lunch or an on-board lunch for those skipping a day. You can also decide to visit some local eateries, it is entirely up to you!

After a day of exploration and sightseeing, you can return to the comfort of your 'floating hotel' with time to unwind and refresh before dinner. Catch up on the day's events with your travel companions and perhaps enjoy a drink on the deck as the sun goes down.

Nothing guarantees a good night's sleep like a day of activity, so climb into your comfortable cabin ready to awake refreshed for a new day. Some nights may have optional activities such as guided tours or a classical waltz and operetta concert in Vienna.

These trips are all about a simple, care-free experience with plenty of relaxation!

  • Stay Local, Eat Local
    Stay Local, Eat Local

One of the absolute highlights of an adventure along the Blue Danube is getting the chance to sample the fantastic food and drink of the regions that you cycle through. Here are some of our favourites!

    • Wiener Schnitzel: One of the best-known specialities of the Viennese cuisine and considered the national dish of Austria. The traditional Wiener Schnitzel is a crispy, thin slice of breaded meat (veal, pork or chicken) accompanied by a potato salad - often bigger than your plate.

    • Goulash: Originating from Hungary and predominantly eaten in Central Europe, Goulash is a traditional soup or stew with tender beef and onions, spiced with paprika. Many recipes also include potatoes, celery, tomatoes and carrots - richly flavoured and best enjoyed with rice, bread, or mashed potatoes.

    • Grüner Veltliner & Riesling: The respected Wachau Valley wine region is known for its full-bodied wine varieties. Wachau Grüner Veltliner is arguably the most iconic of all Austrian wines. It can be described as intense and aromatic, with zesty citrus notes and a touch of white pepper. The neighbouring regions of Kremstal and Kamptal are the only other regions worldwide that are capable of producing Grüner Veltliner like this.

    • Sacher-Torte Cake: Another Austrian invention, this time it's a sweet chocolate sponge cake, with apricot jam and dark chocolate icing. It was invented in 1832 by Franz Sacher who made this for Prince Von Metternich in Vienna who was desperately trying to impress his dinner guests. Safe to say it has been a favourite ever since!

    • Potato dumplings (bryndzové halušky): Probably the most famous local dish in Slovakia that is very similar to gnocchi and contains sheep's cheese. The steamed dumplings are typically served with lashings of pork shoulder, cabbage, sour cream and fried onions. It's a must-try!
  • Bike & Boat vs Hotel-to-Hotel
    Bike & Boat vs Hotel-to-Hotel

Bike & Boat has boomed in popularity over the recent years and this is for many reasons! Whether you embark on one of our land-based tours or enjoy the best of both worlds on a cruise, the choice is yours!

Easy cycling - Cycling along the Danube is easy-going as you will be following riverside paths that are predominantly flat and traffic-free. This makes the trip quite relaxing and suitable for mixed abilities and families. On Bike & Boat trips there is the added possibility of staying on the boat and taking the 'day off'!

Convenience - On Bike & Boat trips you really don't need to worry about a single thing! Simply unpack your suitcase once, have the boat drop you off at the start of your daily cycle, take a packed lunch with you, and enjoy the ease of having a table reserved for dinner each night.

Meet new people - Many people enjoy a Bike & Boat holiday as a great way to meet new people that are like-minded. The holiday becomes a shared experience with plenty of social spaces including the restaurant, lounge area, and sun-deck, but with the privacy of a private cabin when you need your own space.

Experienced crew - When traveling with a crew and tour guide there's a little bit of extra reassurance when it comes to local knowledge and navigation. On Bike & Boat itineraries there is a guide that will cycle the daily routes which can be useful to learn about extra insights.
