Welcome to Macs Adventure's guide to May cycling holidays. May is one of those months that cyclists talk about all year. Spring is in full swing, the days are noticeably longer, and landscapes across Europe are at their greenest and most colourful.

It's a genuinely great time to be on a bike. Warm enough for relaxed café stops and long lunches in the sun - cool enough to keep turning the pedals without wilting. Ride the Camino Portugués to Santiago, cycle the clifftop Rota Vicentina in Portugal, or follow the Moselle River past vineyards and castles in Germany. Explore the Canal du Midi in France, the Danube Cycle Path in Austria, or Croatia's stunning Adriatic coast. Whatever calls to you, May opens the door to some of the best cycling in Europe.

Portugal

May is a wonderful time to cycle in Portugal, with warm Atlantic weather and roads that are busy with blossom rather than tourists. Ride the Algarve's clifftop coastline, follow rivers from Minho to Porto, or cycle the Camino Portugués Coastal Way toward Santiago. Inland, the Douro Valley's vineyards are lush and green, while the Rota Vicentina offers rugged coastal scenery and peaceful villages at their spring best.

Spain

Spain is well into its stride by May - warm, sunny and still refreshingly quiet in many regions. Cycle Mediterranean landscapes in Catalonia, ride through white villages and olive groves in Andalucía, or explore wine country in La Rioja.
